Hi All, I have a 9 wk-old puppy that's generally very calm, well socialized with people, and doesn't blink an eyelid when I run my loud blender in the kitchen and is generally fine with his collar and leash. However, I see random bouts of hyper energy once or twice a day where he starts jumping up and down, bucking like a bronco if he is on a leash and getting nippy. I have tried distracting with treats, or moving him to a different location, asking him to sit, but nothing seems to work. The only response I can think of is to carry him to his playpen or crate to let him cool down. Any suggestions?
This is called the zoomies and very normal at that age! When Luna got them she used to run a loop kitchen, hall, dining room and back until she had burned all the energy. On the lead she would nip, jump and become a little s**t. They can't help it and sometimes I think it is best for them to express the energy then they become back to the normal calm puppy the are Sorry it isn't much help but it is normal and he will grow out of it. If you think he is going to hurt himself at all the yes put in him in the playpen so he is safe.
It's very normal and he will grow out of it. And yes, putting the pup in the crate or playpen to calm down is a great idea!
Thanks Christina & Jo, its a HUGE help to hear from the more experienced folks here on the forum. I'm probably extra-jumpy because this is my first pet.
I am far from experienced. Luna is just over 14 months and was my first puppy and dog. Everyday we are still learning but it will get easier and is so worth it when you see them learn and develop!
