My five month old Lab will not stop digging up the lawn and lifting plants from their lots. The problem is particularly bad in the morning. We try to supervise her at all times in the garden. We filled a paddling pool with earth and tried to redirect her to that. Will we ever get our lawn back !!!! Do we just have an enthusiastic digger and will it end one day
Funnily enough I was just wondering the same thing. Our 4 month old also likes to dig up the lawn. "Fortunately", the lawn isn't in great shape anyway (has lots of weeds/moss) so when he grows up a bit we'll have it re-turfed ... but nevertheless, ideally he'd not do it (especially when he brings into the house a big clod of earth and proceeds to shake it!). We have noticed that ours digs up when he has not had enough exercise or activity. He particularly likes to dig along the home foundation and lawn boundaries in search of insects or stones. We have been trying to redirect him and then put some extra tiles we have over the area. He leaves them alone then. He also goes after the wooden fence. Have tried the bitter spray, which seems to work on fence for a couple of days. But these activities return in cycles. I guess permanent solution might be making sure they are engaged in more interesting stuff and tired.
Bare earth was my girl’s favourite, a patch in the garden could become a nice hole in no time. She enjoyed it! We gave her a sand pit to dig in, which helped, but didn’t stop her entirely. We would either supervise or cover her holes up. We couldn’t be garden proud! We have now been able to repair her work with a system of repairing the lawn with fencing off the small area as we repaired it. She doesn’t do it now in her second year. Everything is so much fun for them in the first year! Some people suggest penning an area for them to use for a while if you want to protect most of your garden. Hopefully it will be less exciting for your dog!
Thank you for the advice. We have repaired some of the holes. We hope it is something she may grow out of and until then we will live with it. Last few days haven’t been so bad
