Hi all Has anyone ever had any trouble with there pup going on the lead. He runs away and hides every time I try to take him for a walk. When I eventually get him in the lead he seems to enjoy the walk. It’s just a nightmare trying to get him on the lead in the first place. This makes it difficult for me to take him off the lead in public in fear of not getting him back on it as he runs away when he knows I want to put him back on the lead. Thanks for reading
Hi. The lead thing sounds like it's a game. Sorry not sorry but what's your pup doing off the lead in public? Designated enclose area with no-one else around fine. Until Your recall is perfect you cannot afford to let any dog off. Your pup could be attacked by a reactive dog. Pick something up. Somebody was dropping sausages with screws and stuff in around here at one point. My area since the first lockdown has had a huge number of puppy/dog thefts, most in daylight public areas knives brandished and two or three people doing it. I teach combat arts carry a heavy stick when walking. I also know if they targeted are pup I wouldn't stand a chance. Please don't make it any easier for them. Chris
Make lead on/lead off a game. Lead on; treat, lead off; treat. Repeat repeat repeat; in the house, in the garden (and on safe walks).
Thanks Chris that’s sounds intense. Wouldn’t want to mess with you anyway. It’s in public but there’s no one around. There’s a remote river I bring him to and he loves it. It can just be hard getting him back on the lead sometimes. Any advice is appreciated
Hi Jake. Don't mean to sound that way just very very tired. It's those that don't practice that you have to watch lol. Something I'm really into is hand feeding. Encourages them to come to you, helps create a bond. One of the first things I did was teach touch. Nose touch to the hand gets a bit of food. From that I got the recall, sit - food down food. and so on. I would suggest the same with the lead. Chris
The puppy training I went to used a leather slip lead. They aren’t mentioned much on here but whenever I go to a game show all the working dogs seem to wear them. By having a loop to put over his head you use a treat to lure him to your hand by putting his head through the loop and job done. It saves having to try to grab the collar to clip the lead on. As 5labs says lots of practise when you aren’t leaving the house and teach loose lead walking so pulling isn’t an issue. Also use a long line when you are out and want to let him off until recall spot on. Pippa’s Total Recall book is very good apparently. I’m sure things will improve soon.
