Hello Everyone! My 1st - I have a 9 month old Lab, Elle. She and I love to walk but the colder it gets in Minnesota, the more worried I get about her being warm enough. Example is that we usually take about an hour walk on a nice paved walk way. It's about 40ish now and she seems fine but does she need a sweater or boots if it gets below a certain point? She's afraid of the dark and the rain, so we will see when the snow comes Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!
I live in Southern England and have never considered putting a coat on my dog. However I do know people in Scotland who use them. I think maybe it depends how active your dog is on her walk. It sounds like she might be on the lead on a paved walkway so possibly not running around? I’ve never seen a lab in boots other than when injured but it doesn’t get that cold here. Hopefully someone in your neck of the woods will reply.
I live really high up in Northern England. We get lots of snow and winds. The snow stays for weeks too. Last weekend we had snow drifts over the wall tops, 3/4 drifts, it was about -5 plus wind chill. It does not bother Meg at all. She loves it. She can be outside with the kids making snowmen for ages, it really does not bother her. No coat or boots needed, just heaps of fun for her. She is very robust.
I've only put coats on any of our Labs when they were sleeping in a snow cave with me.. When they were running around they were fine. Years ago we were cross country skiing in the Spring, and came to a partially frozen lake. Tilly jumped in, and I thought "That was a mistake, how will I get her out?" She scrambled out, and climbed up the bank, then turned around an jumped in again. All of our dogs have loved snow, and never had an issue with being in it.
