I am really ashamed to admit this but I never trained my now 7 year old to walk properly on a loose lead. I live very close to the beach and have always just loaded my boys into the back of the car for a 5min drive there. I have managed to teach him a good recall ( using Pippas excellent training advice) and all of his exercise is either on the beach, in the sea, or within the confines of our allotment. However I now have my new pup and am making a really effort to train him. Does anyone have any tips about how train an older dog too or even it's it's possible? I would welcome anyone's thoughts on this.
It's possible to teach an old dog new tricks. But they take longer to learn the new trick. And you have to 'undo' seven years of learning history, which did not involve a loose lead. I suggest you find a force free trainer to teach you how to teach the old and new dog to walk on a loose lead.
I took your excellent advice and found a trainer who lives in the next village. She is really good and is doing home visits and Henry is doing really well. I have John, my pup , signed up to Pippas dogsnet training and as Henry has also shown great interest in this and has watched John, I started him ( separately from John) on the programmes and he is loving it.
