Obviously with all this warm weather we've been having recently there's been a lot of stuff shared around Facebook about not leaving dogs in cars. Naturally to me this is common sense but unfortunately some people still seem to think this is ok as it's 'only for ten minutes' and 'the windows were open'.

Having read some of the comments on the 'don't cook your dog' campaign I'm amazed at the amount of people that are saying they think it is more appropriate to leave you dog in the car whilst you nip into the shop etc than leaving it at home or tying it up outside. (Personally I wouldn't never advocate thing the dog up outside either but it's surely preferably to leaving it in a hot car??)

The dogs trust produced a good video recently of an ice statue in a hot car, which can be found here http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oMmjnI0HZ3Y personally I found this really sad, even though it's just a bit of ice!!!
I've also seen a video going around of a vet who sat in a hot car and filmed the results.

I've been thinking for a little while about how a campaign involving getting volunteers to sit in a car for five minutes on a hot day would probably be really effective. You could park it in supermarket car parks or go to shows and village fetes and invite people to sit in the car and time how long it is before they want to get out, and measure the temperatures etc. I think people would find it really shocking.

Re: Hot dogs and hot cars

Recently a woman left a 16 week old puppy in a Land Rover, in the sun, with the back windows opened about 2". I said I thought it far too hot to leave the dog in the car, she sort of harummphed, so I said, can you leave the back open, she said no and was obviously annoyed with me and said the pup would be alright. I knew it wouldn't and risked her wrath by telling her the pup would most probably die, again she was very annoyed with me but decided she would move the car into the shade. I pointed out that the shade may not be the shade when she got back to the car, by then she was icily annoyed with me and insisted on doing what she wanted to do. However, after lunch she did bring the pup out with us. She is a highly intelligent woman, so I cannot understand why she thought it alright!

I get really frustrated and annoyed when I see people leaving dogs in cars whilst they 'pop' into the shop

I just can't beleive people would be so stupid as to put their dogs life at risk like that... The mind boggles as to how people think that's ok...

I've never left Penny in the car, even in cold weather as I'm too afraid shell get stolen!
