Hi guys i am starting to leave Milo alone when i go out but as i leave he really cries and i feel so guilty but obviously he needs to learn any tips pls
Re: crying when left alone I am sure that some with more experience will answer this better than I could but as the owner of a 12 week old pup we have already gone through this stage. When we first got Whisky we started with just a few minutes of being left alone and he did cry/whine. The important thing is not to rush back to him but wait until he stops crying before going back to him. (Otherwise he thinks he is being rewarded for crying!). By waiting until there is a pause you can then reward him for being quiet - the behaviour you want to achieve. If you turn "leaving alone" into a game/training session and build up the duration of being left alone then his crying will cease. We crate Whisky each night the lounge and for short periods during the day and he is fine - no crying/whining.
Re: crying when left alone Jack rarely cries, but Barney was crying almost every time we crated him. I have sat beside the crate before he cries and he has happily fallen asleep, and other times just pottered around and he has cried for a minute then gone to sleep. I have found he settles better if he doesn't see me leave, I may have just gone upstairs for a shower, or out of the front door. It seems to be working so far, we went out this afternoon, and used the other door so he didn't see us, we listened as we left and as we got back and there wasn't a peep out of him! Yesterday he wasn't even in the crate but saw me go outside to peg the washing out and howled before I got the second thing pegged out. Have you tried a kong or other treat? Lou
Re: crying when left alone On the main website www.labradorsite.com there is an article 'Crate training your Labrador puppy' . It has advice on what to do when puppy cries. There are quite a few articles on this subject. Hope they help.
