Re: Seeing the behaviourist Sounds like you've done exactly the right thing, so pleased for you both!!
Re: Seeing the behaviourist Sounds good Lauren. Pleased you are sounding positive and motivated. Will love to hear how things go.
Re: Seeing the behaviourist Good for you Lauren, so glad you had a good training session. Some things I can use too so thank you for sharing xx
Re: Seeing the behaviourist I'm really glad it went so well Lauren. Thank you for writing up what you did its really helpful. What you wrote about letting dogs meet for too long because it's going well then goes wrong happens to me but in our case it's humans not dogs. On the rare occasions Scott and Scout allow someone we meet to touch them I really need to move them away after a couple of seconds. I do try but quite often the people stroking will keep trying to stroke them until its too much for them. I need to speak out more and ask people to only touch briefly then wait for S&S to go back for more then again only touch briefly. Ive thought this before but feel a bit rude dictating to people. :-\ Keep us posted on how you get on. ;D
Re: Seeing the behaviourist I wonder if getting those brightly coloured collars and leads with "IN TRAINING" etc. might help you Jen and Lauren as then you won't feel rude when you move on ??? x
Re: Seeing the behaviourist I've actually been considering getting one of those 'gizapaw' ones that I think Annabelle has for Barley and/or Puzzle, been toying with the idea for a couple of months but think I should just bite the bullet and do it... If she's wearing that maybe I won't feel so stupid running around the field shouting 'this way!' Lol
Re: Seeing the behaviourist I have just bought one of the bright blue training leads. I think one of the biggest problems we have as dog trainers is other people and their dogs. Now I accept absolutely that Molly has to learn how to deal with both and it is my job to help her. But do they really have to stand in front of you chatting (usually their insight into what you are doing wrong) whilst you try to control a 50 lbs of leaping dog? On our first trip out with new 'training lead' lady jogs past and says 'I won't stop and chat I can see you are training'. RESULT. That is all I want. Just let me get on with it.
Re: Seeing the behaviourist
I wonder if getting those brightly coloured collars and leads with "IN TRAINING" etc. might help you Jen and Lauren as then you won't feel rude when you move on ??? x
That's a good idea Helen. The ones I found do a nervous collar and leads as well as training etc www.friendlydogcollars.com Great yours worked Tina will have another look at them. ;D
Re: Seeing the behaviourist Mine came from friendlydogcollars. They do a range of collars, harnesses and different length leads. I opted for the standard lead, it cost £9.99 including postage and arrived within 48 hours. Hope it all goes well for you Lauren, I know nobody would work harder at it.
Re: Seeing the behaviourist Glad things are looking positive for you both. I got a collar for megs which shows she's deaf. It's certainly helped. People now understand why I stand there and do all these hand signals at her instead of calling her. And of course they're sympathetic so she gets lots of fuss.
Re: Seeing the behaviourist So we've been practising the 'this way' exercise and that seems to be going really, really well. In an empty field at least! Lol I'm sure it will be another story when I take her to the park, plus I'll look like a crazy woman everytime Penny is going for a hello with another dog and I appear to leg it in the opposite direction of the owner... Very rude lol I have to admit to failing to start on our 'go see' exercise. I've been so exhausted after work lately it's all I can do to drag myself to take Penny for a walk, I don't know what's got into me! Must try harder!
Re: Seeing the behaviourist Glad the 'this way' is working I think the weather changing constantly isn't helping anyone
