Awww cubby sorry to hear that.

If it were me I wouldn't be able to wait 7 weeks for an uncertain outcome. I would check out the other breeder with the black boy - but be sure all health tests are in place, of course.

    Good luck!

Disappointing and so sorry. Like some of the others, I had my heart set on a lovely yellow lady and came home with "the black beast" instead! Can't imagine having any other pup now! Give a little time to think it out!

If this breeder and the parent dogs have a lot to recommend them and you're prepared to have a choc female rather than a make then I'd wait and see.

But if you really want a black one and find an equally good breeder with equally good parent dogs (excellent health test results and temperament) then switch :)

Don't compromise on parent health and temperament and breeder competence though :)

Sometimes, we end up thinking that the way things work out was just how it was always meant to be. :) :) :). I'm sure that'll be the case with whatever you decide.

    Good luck with it all.

Oh that's tricky. I know sort of the feeling as we wanted a black girl and when the litter arrived there was only one black girl and I thought the breeder would keep her. I had been reading various litter alerts and did have an idea of how to find another pup of the same criteria. I was going to stick to my decision as I had other variables at home that really meant I had too. We did get her in the end but I know I would have looked for another breeder if they offered me a dog. I hope you find your dream puppy soon :)

A difficult one, especially when you have set your expectations, and sorted timings etc. I would hate to wait 7 weeks and find that none are available but equally would take the risk if they are good breeders you trust and the parents are health tested.

I know the breeder where we got Benson has a litter right now available mid august of choc labs, and a gold lab female pup ( I know I really shouldn't be looking! ;D)

I guess I am trying to be OK with a girl. I think I will be. Like my 6 year old son said - "Mom, I dont care if its a boy or a girl - they're all cute!" He said we could name her Coconut and call her Coco for short.

I think I will see if the breeder can give us the chocolate boy IF she decides she doesnt want it, and if not we will take the chocolate girl. Or maybe we can decide as soon as she makes up her mind if she is keeping the boy. I think she is definitely keeping a chocolate girl.

I'm 100% biased as I have a Chocolate girl but it would depend on the reasons why you'd prefer a male vs female and how strong you feel about that - tend to agree with your son though, they're cute regardless ;)

Well I have a boy lab now. He is black. But he's sick with oral melanoma. I'll probably have to put him down soon.

Originally I always loved male labs because I like their bigger blockier heads and bigger size. I also think they are a little "dopier". Do boys seems to get along with other dogs better? In my family I've noticed that the dogs that always end up growling and fighting with each other are females. I'm not worried about my lab being like this, but I have family members with other breeds of dog (Staffordshire Terrier) and I think my dog would make out a bit better if I got a male. But I dont see that dog enough to make it a big deal. Mostly I just like the bigger size of a male.

I think I'll be happy with a girl too. They are all cute. I just want a dog to love!

Having had male and female gundogs plus other breeds , I honestly cant agree that males are easier , I think its down to how they are brought up and trained . My last Lab Tess was much more animated , bold and exciteable than my current Lab boy Sam, who is a wuss ( but loved all the same ) . Hope all works out for you , and sorry to hear about your boy too .
