I had a bit of a panic yesterday when Sophie texted me to say Lilly snapped at a wasp and had been stung in the mouth. She gave a sharp yelp, and started "licking her lips" quite persistently.

Of course I had to be stuck at work at the time ::)
All turned out fine, no ill effects thankfully.
I told her to phone a friend in her village who works for a vet, and luckily her and her partner were at home, and she checked her over and pretty much was available to scoop them up if any problems developed which was my fear really. Sophie knows our vet well, and their number and could have phoned if she was really worried, but it was nice to know someone was on hand if required.

I am just wondering if this has happened to others? I know we could give her Piriton (Chlorpheniramine) and I think I was told to give a Lilly-sized dog (25kg) a whole 4mg tablet if there is any swelling or she was upset by it. I suppose I worry about stings in the throat and anaphylaxis and such things. I'm also aware that often a first bite is okay but if there is an allergy (rather than just discomfort) that a second or even a third sting could be more severe. Other people have told me their dogs make it a sport snapping at and eating wasps!

Has anyone had any problems with dogs and wasp stings and could offer any other advice? This last week they have been awful up here :(

Ah Jacqui I haven't so can't help ,sorry glad she's seemed ok.they are so daft these dogs aren't they?
Dexter snaps at flies in the house if the doors have been open...we do have wasp / hornets here but so far shown no interest.....the hornets are orange and scuttle around in the grass so it's more stings to the paw that goes on,2 dogs we play with have had that recently..no yelp, just run out then come back limping.....
It's a good thing to ask,if you are suffering I'm sure many others are too.Has it been a bad year for wasps?

Glad she seems ok, phew. It's good there were friends around.

Charlie used to snap at bees in the garden when he was a young pup. I asked the vet what I should do if he got stung.

I think the advice was if stung on the body, keep an eye on it. If on the face get down to the vet at earliest opportunity, and if eyes or mouth treat it like an emergency.

So if that's toned down a bit for wasp sting, rather than bee, sounds to me like you did exactly the right thing in being ready to get to a vet at the sign of any problems.

Thank you. I was relieved when my friend emailed later to say she was fine.
Made me think about how you would cope with an emergency if you didn't drive.
Or if Lilly really DID leg-it when I wasn't around :(

Glad Lilly's OK. Molly snaps at wasps, although I try to stop her as I worry about stings too.

Pops got stung on the muzzle last year; we treated it with a frozen pack of peas and lots of TLC.
