We have a 3yr old choc lab who is brilliant in every way bar one. That is he barks in back of car, behind guard when car stops until he is let out. Need this stopping and have tried food, water spray but to no avail.

    Anyone else had/have this problem.

    Hi there.
I can't say I have had this problem.
Is your dog barking to get out for a play or reward or a walk?
If so, then you maybe need to stop rewarding him and let him learn that rewards only come with quiet behaviour. Maybe taking him in the car but not letting him out and driving straight home. Or not letting hm out until he is quiet. You might need a set of ear plugs and a good book while you wait,
I imagine you would treat it in the same way as crate training. Barking to get out is bad, but quiet is rewarded with being let out for breakfast, a play, a cuddle etc. If you are "rewarding" him when he barks then he is maybe associating his barking with the "reward", so it keeps going, it is reinforced. You need to "extinguish" the behaviour by not rewarding/ignoring the behaviour you want to extinguish.
    I hope that makes sense.
    Is it any help?

    Oh how painful and frustrating.

I agree with Jac. I'd park the car in your driveway, pop him in the boot (with a bowl of water), sit in the front seat with a book and some ear protection and wait it out. The millisecond he stops, leap out of the car and let him out. Repeat. Do not ever let him out while he is barking. This method will take some time.....

If he sits in the back seat with a car harness does he bark? Maybe changing his location would break the association. Long shot but worth trialling perhaps.

My dog doesn't bark, but he whined in my estate car when he was in his crate in the boot. Only when we went to his favourite walk, and only for the last little bit when we pulled up. I hated it.

If I was on my own it was very tricky. I couldn't reward him for quiet fast enough - he was in the back, and it took too long to get out, round the back, open up and give him a treat. Even with a clicker, the delay was too long.

Waiting it out was getting impractical. I work. I'm on a schedule.

(I also have a landrover with a dog guard - he whined when we pulled up at the place he did his gundog lessons. But I solved the problem there by rewarding for quiet no probs - I can reach him).

So, I have on my car key fob, remote opening for the boot.

    I'd pull up, whine, whine...
    I'd stop, whine, whine..
Instant of quiet, between whines, I'd press the remote open for the boot..silence, dog looking out expectantly.

It worked. Silence = boot opens. Perfect.

Well, it seems to be working, anyway....for now....
