    Hi all,

I have just joined and I have a problem with my puppy Aslan (9 weeks).

We got him a week ago, and for the first couple of days, he had normal firm poos. Since two days ago though, he has been having very loose stools with spots of blood in them.
The breeder gave us a bag of the food that she had been giving him (Eukanuba puppy all breeds) and we have bought some Eukanuba puppy large breeds. Because it was the same brand, we didn't think that we needed to change it gradually - we had fully changed it by two days.
He has also been chewing everything he can get his paws on in the garden, including acorns and oak leaves - his favourites :-\ I know he shouldn't eat these, and as far as I'm aware he doesn't actually eat it, just chews it.

Is it a mix of these that is causing him to have loose stools, or one in particular, or is it something different?

We took him to the vet the first day, and she gave us three tins of wet food, and some Pro-Kolin+. He has been having these, and did have a scrambled egg in one meal.

Sorry for the long message :)

    Hi tbere Kathryn.
I suppose this could be a number of things.
But to be honest, if there is blood in Aslan's poop I would want to discuss it with the vet.
Hope he settles. He might need some gentle gastro diet food for a bit.
Would love a pic once you have time.

    Hi and welcome :)
If there is blood in his stools, I would take him to the vet as that isn't normal.
At such a young age, a lot of pups have sensitive tummies, so it could be from anything.
I love his name :) photos are appreciated ;)
Let us know how he gets on :)

    Thank you both :)

We were just thinking that the blood was the result of him pooing so often, as he had diarrhoea, and that he had just been straining himself.
However it could be something different :-\

    Hi

Just wondering if you have been to the vet with your pup as we are in the same situation. It may be the treats with ours, he seems fine in himself but there was a bit of mucousy blood and he seems to be straining but it's all runny (sorry for the long description). We did change his food to Natures Best and then Hi Life as soon as we got him as I thought this seemed a good brand and the breeder was not there when I went to collect my pup so I didn't know what he was on.
He has also been running around the garden eating stuff.
By the way the blood only appeared tonight so we'll see what happens tomorrow morning and if not I will phone the vet for advice.

So there is blood and water this morning after he emptied his runny tummy, he was straining again....so have phoned the vets and they want to see him at 12:00 today. Am so worried, he's still running around happy but I know pups can go downhill fast if they are ill, could this be serious. My Husband suffers from colitis and he says that if blood arrives after it normally means it's a blood vessel burst from the straining. Hopefully this is all it is and the vet can recommend either the chicken and rice route or some other diet.
He might have also eaten something outside.....I did manage to catch him chewing a mouldy apple the other day and licking a slug...ugh! Am so worried.

I slept with him downstairs last night as wanted to keep an eye on his toileting and make sure he was ok. He didn't go all night so he was ok.

Lola got very poorly at about 9 weeks. She got worms (we think from next doors cat who visited our garden often) and the wormer she was first given didn't cover the kind of worms she had. Did the vets listen to his belly? It could also be the treats. There is a big list of stuff Lola can't stomach. Pork, beef, egg and apple. Make a mental note of the different stuff he has

Hi, my yellow lab is 14 now. A while ago now she too was passing blood. Took her straight to vets and they diagnosed colitis. Treated with steroids but now she's got cushings disease they can't treat it. I found fish4dogs salmon with potato has controlled it. See what vet says, please let us know.

Hi, so the vet said he's ok and the blood is to do with the straining. I took the food I've been given him, which was High Life, Natures Best and the sachet of pedigree. She says that it's too much variety for him and so she has told me to do the following:-

    1) Starve him for four hours.
    2) Feed small portions of boiled chicken and rice (three teaspoons a time)
    3) Tomorrow, if he's feeling better, start to, very slowly, introduce the High Life back into his diet ( this is what he was originally on when we brought him home and he had no problems).
    4) Once all back to normal, a week later, start to introduce him to dry puppy food as she said he should be on dry food which will help his teeth. Very slowly 7-10 days change him onto that.

She wormed him as well and gave him an antibiotic/anti inflammatory to help with the straining.

Hope this works, he's still such a happy pup. Can anyone recommend a good quality dry food and is anyone else just feeding dry food?

    Re: Bloody loose stools

I can highly recommend Wafcol Salmon and Potato puppy food. Albert is 6 months now and is thriving on it. It is completely grain free and hypoallergenic with good levels of omega oils. A bit more expensive but Pet Planet has good price, the best I've found and delivery is free
. I'm still feeding him 3x daily which suits him and feed a good bit less than recommended amounts.
At last weigh in with vet 2 weeks ago he said Albert was near perfect weight which is good but I need to keep it that way so I do add some cooked veg for 2 meals to bulk it out for him as I haven't increased the amount since he was 4 months. He also has sardines twice a week.

    Good luck

Thanks Jan, I will order some.

Oh sardines, are they just in oil in a tin or fresh?
When he is 6 months, I was thinking about, feeding him a raw chicken wing here and there as I read this is ok, have you given yours any raw food?

I have given Albert tinned Sardines and pilchards in oil from around 12 weeks. He goes mad for them.

I have also given him raw chicken wing, lamb ribs, and raw beef ribs to chew on, plus raw trout and sardines, all from around 16 weeks, with no adverse effects! I have fed the raw separately to his kibble with a good 8-10 hours in between BUT he does appear to have a cast iron stomach as he's never had any really loose stools no matter what I've given him.

Thanks Jan, yes I have read that it must be given separately to any kibble or wet food.
