    Hi,

I have a 15 week old labrador puppy called Whisky. He is walked off the lead for around 45 minutes per day and 30 minutes on the lead. After each walk he then sleeps for a short while but when he wakens up he just wants to play. I also use the walk to train him and train him in the back garden - at least 3 short sessions per day. Adult labradors seem quite laid back in comparison. I guess Whisky is just an excitable puppy but at what age do Labradors start to calm down?

Maybe someone with an older dog can say...my boy isn't showing much signs of being calm yet at 17 months. ;D. Although hoolies in the house have almost stopped and he is a bit less silly than he was. ;D ;D

1hr 15 mins exercise a day is a lot for a 15 week old pup. There is an article here which explains why:

My Tatze is 17 months, she is as lively as ever. But now that I have a 13 week pup too, I realise she is really calm in comparison!

    It creeps up on you.

    ;D

Just like humans , they all differ . Sam was always a calm puppy and in turn is a laid back somewhat serious adult dog who only comes to life when training or playing with doggy friends . In contrast , my last Lab Tess was about four years old before she became remotely adult, good luck :)

Mmm, I think meg was about 2 - 3 years old when she settled down. But even then she still had her mad moments at times. Still does at 14 :)

We noticed that our evenings started to become more peaceful at about age 2. Painful, attention-seeking behaviour can now reliably be headed off at the pass with a pre-emptive 15 min training session - that works wonders.

I think Molly started to get easier around 8 months of age and now, at nearly a year, she is definitely less demanding. She still needs lots of exercise but in between will mooch round the garden alone or doze at my feet. Hang on in there!

My previous two Labs gradually improved over time and settled down into (mainly) sensible dogs by about 2 years old.

We've found with Holly that a daily routine really helps to manage her mood. She gets an offlead walk after breakfast which is a big. exciting, energy burn. After that she gets an hour's quiet time. She expects a playtime before lunch and before tea so she gets excited at those times. She knows that she will get no attention from lunchtime to about 4pm while we do household stuff so she goes to bed or flops somewhere. She gets a lead walk after tea which perks her up, after which its quiet time until bedtime.

We instigated this pattern when she was a few months old and starting to take short walks.

I would agree around about 2, maybe 2 and a half.
My SIL's dog was here for a holiday this summer and was MUCH MUCH better than last year which was a bit of a nightmare, and even better compared to Easter this year. She was 2 last week.
    There is hope ;D

Well, I'm crying in my beer!

Molly was 11 months yesterday, that means I'm not halfway through yet

The 1 hr 15 min may seem excessive but most of the time he is off the lead is play time and not actually walking (we have a small garden so I take him to the local park for play time). I suppose the total mileage in our daily walks would be around 1.5 miles.

Harley has always been relatively calm, unless you have a ball!! She is quite serious unless it is walk/play/training time :) I think I'm just lucky ;)

At two years and three months Bess is still boisterous and energetic but is more manageable the older she gets. I've found the combination of varied exercise and training has helped the most.

I find that at 6 months they do calm down a little in the house, no more hoolies all evening, more settled and relaxed in the evenings.

However they are jolly and happy dogs and stay that way for years ;D Think they do improve from about 2 :)

I have two three year olds and they still go loopy. ::)

However don't panic the calm periods are increasing. They have been settling down and sleeping in the evenings and sleeping after a walk and if there's nothing much going on for about 12 months or so rather than wanting to be entertained or getting up to mischief.

Unfortunately it's not a case of they wake up one day calm it's a very slow process but every so often you notice it. ;D

Oh dear....Cuillin is three next week and only in the last few months have I seen a marked increase in Chilling Out Ability. Until very recently shes been Ms Hyperpants....however I have also decided in the past few months that I want my evenings back and have been teaching her to Settle properly. A Lot....so might be that too :D. She thrives on a good 2 hours quite intense off leadexercise with a lot of running and gundoggy stuff thrown in, a short more chilled walk later, and a training/play session in the house, then shes happy as larry and wll chill inbetween....always up for anything else on offer still mind you, she just doesnt pester anymore!

Hi, Murphy is 7 and half months old and lucky for us he calmed down quite a lot at about 5 months. Up until then I literally was constantly on the go with him and had to watch him every minute of the day or else he'd be up to no good. I can now sit down during the day and he will come sit by me and fall asleep. He has always settled down in the evening (about 8pm) since the day we got him, so we've always had peace and quiet at night time. Think we've been very lucky. Now my 9 year old son is a different kettle of fish!!!!!!! :) :)
