Not sure if this is the right section but food does affect health. Mods, please move to a more appropriate section if needs be. I am wondering whether to try one of the kibbles with potato as an ingredient rather than rice but slightly concerned to introduce it to my Labs of 8 and 2 and a half as they are used to rice. Though no 1 Lab has raw food for his main meal. Has anyone used Lamb/Chicken/Salmon and Potato and if so, what is your opinion?
Re: Kibble with potato in Hi Stacia, is there any particular reason you would like to try potato after using rice successfully? I use Skinners Salmon & Rice after quite a few recommendations on the forum, I am extremely pleased with it. I haven't used anything with potato though sorry I can't help xx
Re: Kibble with potato in Hi Stacia, meg has fish4dogs salmon with potato. The reason I put her on this was because she got bored with arden grange and wouldn't eat. I sent off for some samples from different companies and meg preferred the fish4dogs. Also, she suffers a little bit from colitis and because of the cushings disease it can't be treated with steroids and I've found since giving her this it's cleared up.
Re: Kibble with potato in It is just that he scratches a wee bit despite Advantage which I have now stopped after a three months, sorted out the moth eaten look! I fed my GSPs on Skinners but they both developed lipomas, I am sure it had nothing to do with the food, but reluctant to use it on the Labs. My surname is also Skinner, so I should use it! I just wondered about the potato and wanted to hear others views rather than the view of a manufacturer.
Re: Kibble with potato in All I can say that fish4dogs suits megs. No more colitis, her coat is lovely and shiny, no tartar on her teeth and she's 14, no grain, no preservatives, no sugars and no colouring. Regards potato I do give meg a boiled potato every now and again and she loves it. My view is that I have noticed a difference in her coat, her teeth and her poos. She doesn't scratch, which she was doing occasionally. I know it suits meg so will keep her on it.
Re: Kibble with potato in I changed my last Lab to Symply salmon and potato in old age (getting on for 14 years) , after living on tuna and rice for years, and he was fine. I changed because he stopped eating the rice - not sure why, but the new food brought his appetite back for another 6 months.
Re: Kibble with potato in We switched to Canagan (grain free and uses sweet potato) a while ago and Harvey seems very well on it. That said, he does seem to have gone off it a little recently and sometimes needs to be enticed to eat his meal (which is just wrong for a lab!). So, we may try a different food for a while to give him a change.
Re: Kibble with potato in I fed Murphy my old lab fish 4 dogs cod and potatoe from about age 11. I also gave him nature diet wet cod and potatoe mixed with his dry when he got to 15 to moisten it a bit. He loved it. He'd been on eukanuba chicken and rice up to then and had always had colitis. He changed to the fish 4 dogs with no problem and no more colitis. Wish I'd changed sooner. :
Re: Kibble with potato in
Sorry for my ignorance.... but is potato meant to be good for them?
I don't think raw white potato is, no. But potato as a source of carbohydrate in kibble will be processed to make it very digestible.
Re: Kibble with potato in I believe I'm correct in saying that raw potato is dangerous because it is a member of the nightshade family, and cooking destroys the alkaloids. However cooked potato contains many nutrients (though I think possibly vitamin c is destroyed by heat in cooking?) and I suppose we also need to bear in mind the salt most people add to potatoes cooked for human consumption - though I do give Molly leftovers. Potatoes in kibble manufactured for dogs will clearly be safe.
Re: Kibble with potato in Luckily don't put salt in cooking potatoes. Or veggies for that matter. So meg is safe eating both. She doesn't like fruit but loves her veg.
Re: Kibble with potato in I've been thinking about switching Penny to a salmon and potato food rather than what she has currently which is chicken and rice. The only real reason for that is that the salmon and potato version has omega 3 fish oils added to the food which is what our vet recommended for her joints so this would be in addition to the cod liver oil supplements she already gets. I have wondered about the effects of switching from rice to potato as the carbohydrate - would that then be classed as being wheat/gluten/grain free provided it's just the salmon and potato in the feed? (I'm talking about Arden Grange in particular).
Re: Kibble with potato in As long as there are no other grain listed lauren (obviously : ) then yes it would be grain free if potato is the carbohydrate. As I've mentioned I had my old lab on a cod and potato diet for his last four years with no problem. In fact he was much better and didn't have colitis again. Wish I'd done it sooner.
Re: Kibble with potato in I switched Albert from Arden Grange puppy food (which the breeder fed him) to Wafcol Salmon and Potato grain free puppy food. I switched him over at 10 weeks with no problems at all. My reasons were I didn't want any grain including rice, and felt Salmon was a far superior protein than Chicken, mainly because of the higher Omega oils. He is now 6 months and looking great. Jan
