hi all i have a 20 month yellow lab bitch called Pixie, And She sheds loads ! I try and groom her every week or so, and it feels like i could literally go for ever! We usually get her professionally groomed every couple of months, and even the groomer mentioned that she took a couple of bags of hair from her. She is neutered, lives outside during the day, but inside when we get home from work and sleeps inside. Her coat looks in pretty good shape to me (no bald spots), she rarely scratches, eats simpsons premium 100% and is in general great shape. Does anyone think the food could be responsible? or any other ideas? i was thinking of introducing some veg etc into her diet to see if it would help mal
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Hi and welcome Mal Harley sheds quite a lot - she goes through a big shed twice a year, but still sheds hair at other times. I think it's part and parcel of having a dog I'm afraid
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit thanks Naya hopefully it is just normal shedding, but i have had labs before and none to this extreme!
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Hi there and welcome to the forum. Some labs do seem to shed a bit more than others, but they all do it, and I have not found anything that makes much difference, apart from a decent de-shedding tool (like the furminator ). This doesn't stop or reduce the shedding, but it does help reduce the amount the shed indoors, by getting a lot of the loose hair out in one go. Use with caution though, I made a slightly bald patch on my daughter's labrador once with over enthusiastic use of mine
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Hi Mal, and welcome to the forum. I'm with Ternaya on the shedding - its a bit cyclical, but I remember drifts of the stuff at the beginning - maybe I am just used to it now. I also feed Simpsons (80/20) I was interested in your question. particularly after reading an Ad in a doggy magazine "Feed Eukanuba for an extraordinary coat Even up to 80% less shedding Eukanuba's specially formulated nutrition with optimal Omega fatty acids ratio is proven to keep your dog's skin and coat healthy, reducing shedding by up to 80%*" "*compared to a diet with lower fat, lower protein and non-optimal Omega 6:3 ratio. Results in your dog may vary. Excludes weight control and puppy diets" (the very small print) Hmmm...... Interesting but not gone around looking for any evidence on this. Simpsons has pretty high protein levels (at least the 80/20) so I am guessing this is a outright marketing hook, and one of these "compared to supermarket brand" type comparisons.
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit ha! ill try and avoid that mistake, tough my arms will give up before i get any where close to having patches! i prob do need a new de shed tool in fairness as i got this one when she was half the size! plus i am lucky enough she is happy for me to groom away!
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit hi Jacqui an interesting claim indeed! though id prefer her shedding than eating worse quality food (not that i know anything about Eukanuba) the prof groomer told me to give her fish oil etc but i am again not so sure what she was basing this on! mal
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Normal brushes are rubbish. Ours sheds regularly in cycles. Get yourself a shedding blade. They are excellent at clearing out the hair from the coat.
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Think I will stick with my Simpsons too ;D I like my Zoom-Groom, or one of those cheap rubber nubbed mittens. Work well for me. I was told over-grroming increases shedding - don't know it that has any basis in truth
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit thanks all for advise ill invest in some new grooming tools i think ( as well as do some arm reps )
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit When my last dog was shedding for England the vet recommended adding a little olive oil to her food. I think it helped. Not too much though or they will have the squits.
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit milly is 14 months and i have just noticed that she is not moulting nearly as much as she had been i have not given her any thing different but it is good news
Re: Lab shedding quite a bit Taking Charlie swimming seems to help - don't know whether it all just comes off on the towel though! Clumps appear in the washing machine! If it's normal, healthy, shedding - not the result of a problem - not sure why different food or supplements would help? Unless it's a downgrade so the fur grows less? :-\
