We're due to collect our new puppy on Saturday and think we're just about ready to welcome her having read "The Happy Puppy Handbook" from cover to cover. One thing I'm not sure about is the return to home car journey. Our puppy will be just over 10 weeks old and will have had her first vaccination. As our return journey is around 4 hours how safe is it to put her on the ground for a wee on the way home? We're living in rural France and the puppy will have received the standard French vaccinations. Thoughts and advice gratefully received.

Hi and welcome to the forum :) the Happy puppy book is fab :)
What is your pups name? We all love photos on here ;)
You can put pup on the floor for a quick wee, just try and do it in an area that isn't frequented by other dogs and foxes.

Hi there, and welcome to the forum!
I agree with what Naya says - avoiding popular dog-stops on your route back would be good. Not sure how you can be sure about foxes, but the rule of thumb is just long enough to have a chance at a wee.
We would love to hear more about you and your pup - check out Technical & Help about how to post photos :)

    Hello! Welcome!

We had quite a long journey home, took 3 hours. We didn't stop - just pushed on. No accidents. He went to sleep. It still took him a while to wee when we got home - it was all too strange. He got over that quickly though and became a wee machine! ;D

He was travelling between London and Cornwall from being very young. It took him months before he'd go in a motorway service station. We tried - we parked as far away from the dog spaces as possible, covered the ground by the car with puppy pads - but no, wouldn't go. All this did was delay journeys so we gave up, and just pressed on.

Yes, as Julie says you may find it difficult to get your pup to actually go if you do decide to have toilet stops which would actually lengthen your journey while you try and wait for them to go.

They may just find the journey and initial excitement of meeting new people and new experiences too exciting to even think about going to the toilet, or your pup might just go to sleep for the journey in which case you probably don't need to worry too much about a rest stop unless you want one yourselves!

Good luck and let us know how she settles in! We love photos!
