Sam is a very trouble free dog apart from one vice , he eats revolting things and apart from keeping him on lead , what the heck do we do ? I wonder why they do it , well fed and watered with good food and yet a dead gross animal has an appeal akin to a gourmet meal : Currently on medication for a severe tummy upset and yet, I know that at the first opportunity , the demon would do it again :
Re: Why do they do it ? It's a problem for us as well. Bess will happily give up a bone, chew or any other food in the house but outside it is a different story. Our first experience was a severed rabbit's head that I had to get out of her mouth by its ears. Since then there have been numerous other revolting things that she has picked up - it seems the more decomposed the more attractive. The only time Bess has caught a live animal she was so taken by surprise that when I called to her she let it go and the pheasant lived to fly another day! If anyone knows how to stop this horrid habit I'd love to know. Alice
Re: Why do they do it ? Tatze will swap smelly dead stinky things for a smelly stinky tripe stick, so I have one with me at all times (wrapped in two bags to prevent stinky pockets) Then I use the two bags to wrap up the dead smelly stinky thing to throw in the next available bin.
Re: Why do they do it ? I think its all down to personal taste. After all, how many of us can eat perfectly healthy main meals and then succumb to a little 'something nice' whilst out and about? Come on, own up, I'm sure this applies to some of us
Re: Why do they do it ? Lochan, the greediest dog in the world and scavenger extraordinaire, does not eat dead carcases at all, ever. She brings them to me instead. And I think this is the key - she works part-time as a gundog and knows that dead birds, rabbits, etc are to be retrieved, not eaten. I know you do dummy work with Sam. Could you move onto cold game and teach him these items are for retrieving, not scoffing? Just make sure you have plenty of gloves and bags to take the resulting stinking, slimy, maggot-ridden offerings you end up with....

That's a really good idea Lochan , he did bring me one revolting offering some time ago and will Leave immediately , as long as I see him sniffing .The fact that he brought me a dead bird tells me that he isn't scared of picking them up , I`ll work on it, thank you for the tip
Re: Why do they do it ? Charlie likes a taste of the sea about his dead things - rotting harbour porpoise, dead seagulls, rotting large fish. Prefers them big enough to roll in and then carry part round. Just so the smell is sufficient for me to throw up sharing a landrover with him going home. Dead mice or small birds - nah, can't be bothered, really...
Re: Why do they do it ? It is the human animals that cause me problems or the rubbish they discard. I keep removing empty plastic bottles and lager cans from Molly's jaws. So what do I do with them? If I merely discard them I have to face the battle next time we walk past, if I attempt to carry them to a rubbish bin I have to contend with a dog that thinks I've swiped her trophy. Seriously though. It was heavier when you took it there full, so why cannot you take it away with you when you have emptied it and it is presumably lighter
