I posted a while back about how the Small Black Dog (aka Lady) had decided she liked all her new human friends at the kennels. Well today she excelled herself and not only didn't take a second look at me when she went off to her kennel, she also went around there, tail wagging, OFF THE LEAD!

    Sob!

    ;D

Fickle girl indeed :) :) Sam does this sometimes ,always the solemn lad at home but greets other people with tail wags , a tad insulting sometimes ::)

Yes that's true. It's a big relief to know she is happy to go there.

    Feedback from the kennels -

    a) She likes to chill in the shade under her oak tree when it's sunny.
    b) She eats like she's never ever been fed before.
    d) She was very keen on the Lab in the next kennel last time and spent a lot of time flirting with him.
    c) She's very reluctant to get out of bed in the mornings (Just like at home). ;D

I would be happy to see my dog so happy. I have just dropped off some money and a sack of dog food to a rehoming kennels and to hear one of the dogs howling in despair, broke my heart :'(

    Desperate and heartbreaking.

It's well worth trying out a few different kennels if you have to put your dog in regularly, as we do because of work commitments. We tried out a couple out before latching onto our present one. Lady was really unhappy with the first kennels in spite of giving them a good try out ie a few visits to make sure it wasn't just a case of not being used to them. The transformation when we took her to our present kennels was dramatic. The people there have known her from being a puppy of around 6/7 months old (I know - not an ideal age but unavoidable circumstances were against us at the time), and she really likes them and greets them like close friends, which I suppose they are now.

It's really great that Lady has a "home from home" even if it does make you feel a bit unloved! ;D

I wonder whether it helps that she goes on a regular basis - I bet it not being an unusual thing to do for her, plus seeing the people who care for her often, all helps.

It must put your mind at rest slightly though that you have found a kennels that she likes being in? It would be worse if she flat out hated being in kennels at all.

I have to put Penny in kennels for the first time soon and I am dreading it. I can only hope she copes with the experience even a quarter of how well your Lady does!

Yes it's a big relief. We inherited Lady when she was 6 months old and to be honest we wouldn't have chosen to have a dog because of various commitments that make it less than ideal to have one, so success in the kennels front was super important. She's kenneled for around 15 visits a year - mainly 3 night stays but one or two longer than that, and in a perfect world I'd not do that to her.

I'm sure Penny will be fine going into kennels. Dogs are pretty stoic creatures and just get on with what's put in front of them. I don't think they think too deeply about things and after she's done it once she'll know you are coming back for her. Watch out for the high impact welcome when you pick her up. Mine sometimes arrives about mid-chest height! ;D

Basicly your dog is getting 15 holidays a year. My kids would probably like the destination better than home if that was happening.

Re: Kennels - It Gets Worse

Just booked Penny in for her stay at boarding kennels. I'm so nervous. I went up to look around and they are clean and tidy, the dogs were clean and looked happy with waggy tails coming to say hello. The staff were very welcoming and friendly, like they couldn't do enough for me - the same two staff who will be there the weekend Penny goes to stay so that's nice.

Still bricking it though, and I know I will cry when I leave her.... I cried when I left her at the vets for her Spey for heavens sake!!!
