It won't do him any harm. Your best bet is to get him home asap and try a swap for his food bowl full of his favourite food.

Oh dear Lynne , but I think its Jaspers natural instincts kicking in , he is from working stock and so this was normal for him . I would work on the Leave command ( when you have got your breath ) so that if anything like this happens again, hopefully he will give up his prized possession a little more quickly x

Ha Ha Lynne - bet you never thought you would say that, even half jesting!
Think you need to train Mark to do the Leave It command. You got it pretty nailed if you can swap a dead rat.
Hope Mark gets home in time for lunch ;)

learn how to develop and challenge your dog’s natural scenting ability into fun activities that both you and your dog will enjoy. Classes and searches are fully adaptable to the needs of the dog and it’s human!

Any dog can participate in scent work – regardless of age, breed
This is a natural activity that your dog will enjoy.
    Mentally stimulating and tiring.
Helps to build or re-establish the bond between dog and handler.
Suitable for dogs that prefer not to be around other dogs.
We will work with you and your dog to train the basics of scent work using toys or food as the motivator. You will learn how to work as a team, firstly undertaking simple searches, then moving at your own pace, you will progress on to more advanced work with added items and distractions utilising different search techniques. When the weather permits we will take our searches outside and incorporate trailing exercises during the warmer, hopefully drier months!

Oh Lynne I know how you feel. 2 years ago Charlie picked up an injured Pheasant but luckily I had taught him "drop" he immediately dropped on command, the bird was totally unhurt by Charlie and it ran off into the bushes :)

Hope you enjoy your lessons as I am sure Jasper will be great :) x

Oh Lynne what a monkey! I know how Mark feels about being embarrassed....Dexter came tearing out of the bushes once with a foil dish that was once someone's lunch in his mouth and joyfully ran laps round the park playing stay away ......everyone was laughing at me as he play owed and pranced away from me ......all their dogs had been in the same bushes of course and ignored it
Great idea about the training,I think it would be great for you and Jasper xxx
