Up until recently , Sam and Millie have followed the same routine every morning , Sam up first outside then breakfast whilst Millie has a slower start . Then the " watching us eat toast " routine, trying to appear not to be begging but ever hopeful Next comes play whilst we shower and get ready for their first long walk of the day . They play well, considering the size difference, usually involving Sam wafting a toy in front of Millie to tempt her into a game of tug , flying in and out of the house until they realise that the walk is imminent , then a race to the porch for leads on . Its now two weeks since Millie started with what we had hoped was a simple eye ulcer but then twelve days ago, had the emergency eye surgery to place a patch of her own membrane over the damage and save the eye . From that very first day , they have not played once , Sam has not gone for a toy , has left her completely alone without once having to be told so , it makes you wonder if this is some sort of communication or maybe a certain smell ? This morning, for the very first time in two weeks , he has brought a toy to her and she responded , somewhat gentle play following, nowhere near as vigorous as usual though , just a lovely " messing about " together , makes you wonder what our dogs do understand x
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? I've said it before and I'll say it again............ Sam is an angel in labrador clothing ;D He is such a sweet, sensitive soul xxx
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? I'm sure that they understand a lot more than we realise. They pick up all sorts of complex signals from us without sharing a common language. They probably get a lot more information from other dogs.
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? What a clever, sensible boy he is ;D It's good to hear Millie is improving
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? Sam is an angel is disguise I really believe they do know. When my back is really bad Harley won't pull on the lead or jump or play tug with me! I have tried pretending my back is bad when she pulls on her lead, but somehow she knows it's not!!!

Re: Is it body language I wonder ? Sam....you are indeed an angel. With little Millie as your side-kick. A perfect team.
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? Well done Sam. You are a lovely boy helping your mum look after Millie. Extra treat deserved.
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? It is amazing what dog's perceive and which we don't give them credit for.
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? My two regularly play rough with each other. Especially in the kennel in an evening when I'm sorting their bed. :. When scout hurt his mouth a couple of months ago there was no playing rough. They would lie nice and calm while I sorted the kennel and they didn't race about after each other like loons. Just over a week later they reverted to type. I guess Scott must've known because he will egg scout on normally. Sam being such a gentle giant was looking after his pal. It's a great sign they are playing again. ;D
Re: Is it body language I wonder ? Well done Sam! He is special When I came home Monday from a tooth extraction I was feeling very sorry for myself. Lily the doodle ever the bouncy pup had a good old sniff - she's always using her nose that one but she was very interested as I clearly smelt of medication or something. Rusty the big baby was only interested in getting his cuddles but Barney is much more tuned in. He put his front paws on my lap (he doens't normally do this) looked me deep in the eyes seeming concerned, had a gentle sniff then gave me a series of the gentlist little licks over the sore part of my face then looked at me carefully again. I really felt he had communicated his concern for me once again. While they are all special some are off the scale ;D
