The thing to remember Lynne, is that you must catch them in the act ( which you did !) and also that the time out punishment doesnt go on for more than a few mins because they forget what it was all about in the first place, all they know is that you are cross x

    Ah ha, teething :)

Giving him plenty of legitimate things to chew on will help - deer antlers, filled kongs, pigs ears etc. (though watch his weight with the edible chews).

When I saw the title of this thread I thought 'Oh no! Not Jasper!' :)

By the way, I meant we keeping the cage as long as possible, not keep her in it for as long as possible when she needs time out. Amy is great, thank you. Trying to eat the door as we speak.

My dog doesnt like her (very expensive) deer antler either..

But Lynne, do give him some bones to chew on every now and then, they are very important for his teeth, as well as his jaw and neck strength. Best (in my opinion) are the hip 'knobs', as they can chew these up completely. Marrow bones are not so good, as they cant be chewed up as well, and there is a slight danger of chips coming off. Pigs ears alone are not enough to keep him busy, and will not clean his teeth either.

I have been wondering what "bones" are right for Amy to chew on? Are those dried ones from the pet shop ok or not? She is 16 weeks soon, and am I confused as what is classed as "junk food" for her.

Yes, I think I heard that too about soaking the antler, I'll give it a go as well.

Make sure those are raw bones you give Jasper! Cooked bones are more tricky, as they can splinter. If the ham bones are cooked it should be ok so long as they are big, as he will chew the 'chompy bits' at the end, but then you will need to take it away from him once it gets to the sharp bits. I do give Poppy big cooked lamb bones after a roast, but I keep a close eye on her and take it away she has taken the ends off and slurped out the marrow! :)

Big raw bones will be the best for her to chew on as recreational bones, ones which wont splinter. As I mentioned before, I think the 'knobs' at the end of beef thigh bones are very good. I personally have never used the ones from the pet shop, if you mean the ones in shrink wrap, although I do sometimes give her the dried hide 'bones'.

Re: jasper is in bad books,

Yes, from the butcher :) Large leg bones wear down teeth over time and can even break teeth (speaking from experience), so do be careful with them - just take them away when they have chewed off the knobs and don't ever leave them lying around in the yard to dry and get hard (that is when they become teeth breakers). Smaller ones like lamb shanks provide a good chew without the rock hardness of cattle leg bones - we use them sometimes. Lamb necks cut in half across or down the length provide a great, meaty, chewy meal without any really hard bones.
