using one with 19 week old Bryn in our kitchen... only at night. if we go out we leave him in the kitchen with crate open. he will take a bone or kong in there but is just ask likely to take it on the sofa so i wouldn't say he loves it.

has been clean in there but we are starting to have issues with him sleeping and have begun to find that letting him sleep de-crated is better for him... so far he's been clean doing that and has not destroyed anything... I'm sure that soon we will phase it out altogether. partially because we don't want a XXL metal crate clogging up our kitchen, partially because he doesn't really bother with it. but it has been helpful for keeping him clean at night...

I'm phasing Gypsy's puppy pen out - as soon as the new bed arrives!

I will start tonight by leaving the gate open :)

I have sprayed bitter apple on all table and chair legs (not that she has ever tried to chew them - but they were expensive, so better safe than sorry!

Gypsy is being spayed at six months old so I'd like her to be de-crated well before the horrid cone arrives.

We wrapped our furniture legs in corrugated cardboard but were lucky that Riley wasn't a big chewer.

I found a crate really useful for toilet training because they soon learn that they go outside to toilet and not in the crate, but it only works if you don't have a massive crate. Dogs don't like to toilet near their bed so but if the crate is too big you will find they will toilet in the space. I bought a big crate and then used a divider so the puppy had enough room to lay down. As pups grow so quickly the divider allowed me to increase the space as they grew. By the time they were about 6 months they had the whole space of the crate.

I never had any accidents in the crate, however mine were taken outside frequently to toilet and weren't left for any longer than 1-2 hours as young puppies.

I also think that using a crate prevents your puppy chewing dangerous items and destroying your house. Puppies seem to find even plasterboard delicious and can do a lot of damage in a small length of time!

    Hope this helps.

I couldn't agree more - and have always crated my dogs, until Gypsy! She hated it.

She has been fine in her pen and clean and dry every night.

Which just shows they are all different.

My Meg has loved her crate from day one. She has never cried or anything other than slept/chilled in it. She is often in there with the door open. She is 6 months and I can see it being her bed forever :)

He slept through the night, no whining at all. So quiet in fact I got a bit concerned. So I went dowstairs at 6am. He was still curled up in his basket in the crate. No wee or poo in the crate. I let him out, he went into the garden & did a wee straight away then a poo about 5 mins later. He quite happily goes into his crate when I go out now. I am very suprised & impressed how effective the crate is.
