We have 16 week old lab boys who are pretty much house trained and sleeping through the night. They are very well behaved, but we have a little niggle with one if them, Jack. They play, have dinner around 6.30, rest then play again and we go for a nice steady lead walk round the block (15-20mins). They then sleep for most of the evening, with odd bouts of gentle wrestling lol.

We take them out before bedtime, but Jack will not do anything. Barney has a wee and goes in to bed, but Jack just darts back towards the door. We close the door so he has to stay out, but even after 10 minutes of encouraging/cajoling he will not do anything.

He then goes in and gets in his crate for bed and sleeps until my hubby gets up at 6.15am.

This means that he may go 10 hours sone nights without a wee? Is this ok? I don't really see what else we can do, as he does it no matter what time we take him out, almost as though once he retires for the evening thats it, he only wants to sleep

Probably a nice problem to have really, but i can't help worrying x

Harley only goes to the toilet before bed if she wants too. If allowed, she will sleep from 10.30/11pm til at least 10.30/11am straight through. She has been doing this since she was about 6 months. I did ask my vet if it was a problem and she said no, some dogs have bladders like camels ;D

So the last time he has a wee is on the evening walk? I'd guess that he just doesn't need to wee after that. :) Take him out before bed anyway and give him the opportunity but don't make a fuss or worry. If he sees his brother go and still isn't interested then I'd say he just doesn't have the need :)

My dog is a lot older but also has the bladder of a thousand camels :)

My boy acts very differently if his last trip out is the garden, or a stroll around the block.

He will wee on command in the garden - but it's a half hearted dribble. I can ask him a few times, and he'll reluctantly empty himself. I keep up this training because I need it when I'm in a rush for work.

Take him round the block though, and he wees for England.

So I normally take him round the block last thing. I don't like the thought of him having a full bladder overnight. He doesn't bark, or whine, to go out. So I just sleep better if I know he is comfy.

If for some reason I can't take him round the block, he doesn't seem to mind.

Neither of them do anything on the walk, but usually have a wee once we are back. Barney will pretty much go every time we take him out, but Jack seems to sense we want him to go so just plonks himself on the doorstep and refuses to move.

He does seem to know what he wants to do as last night he decided he didn't want to go on their walk, Barney had been chasing him round the garden a lot and i think he was tired, so he got in his crate instead and Barney went for his walk.

They used to wee on command when we first trained them with 'be quick' but now they go out when they want to we don't often do that.

I guess he just has one of those camel bladders ;D thanks everyone x

I coax Rue with her favorite treat when she's being stubborn about going. I'll show her the treat and say 'potty' and it usually works every time!

That absolutely made my night!!!! LOL ;D

FYI, my Orion will have a wee around 1930-2000 and refuses anything further till the next day.....he will get up with us at 0600, but will not go out again for toilet till 0630-0700 even though I try to convince him to. I guess some dogs really do have super bladders - like everyone said, just offer the chance and don't worry if he doesn't. You can lead a dog to the grass, but you can't make him wee.... ::)

Gypsy (Guide dog pup) is 15 weeks now and only allowed to wee and poo in a small paved area in the garden - not out on lead at all unless given the command. She's been clean and dry since 12 weeks.

It sounds harsh, but actually it makes life MUCH easier! She never uses the garden, just her spending area.

My pet dog, Tatze was much harder to train, she was well over 16 weeks before she really 'got it' - I think having a small, specific area and clear commands really helps :)
