In our garden there are a few slugs and snails around (eugh) and i know the dangers of lungworm What can i put down to get rid of them (still 2 weeks and 5 days to puppy!) that won't affect my cat? they'll hopefully be gone before the pup gets home
Re: Slugs I don't think controlling slugs and snails is really the answer to the lungworm risk - as a gardener, I think it's a pretty hopeless battle. I use a nematode product against slugs, and it really does seem to reduce the snail population too (although doesn't claim to do so). Apart from that, I reduce the appeal of my garden to slugs and snails by keeping things tidy, encouraging frogs and toads, growing plants snails don't like and employing copper barriers and gravel paths. I think it's best to speak to your vet about the local risk and ask whether you should use a product, eg advocate, that will protect your puppy.
Re: Slugs would have thought that you're fighting a loosing battle there.. personally wouldn't bother trying to remove them. instead have the pup treated with Milbemax or similar (speak to vet) and teach a strong 'leave it' and you should be fine... Bryn took a passing interest in them a few times and I'm sure he ate a couple, but there are tastier things in the fridge / in our hands / on the table for him so its pretty easy to keep his attention off them... better than trying to chemically cleanse your garden of the little buggers
Re: Slugs I never ever put down anything against slugs and snails. Firstly almost everything that works is very, very poisonous to dogs, and secondly I am against using poison in the garden at all as what is poisonous to dogs is also poisonous to hedgehogs and other threatened wildlife. I have a small wildlife pond, and the frogs, toads, newts, dragonflies and bats seem to keep the pests (slugs, snails, and mosquitoes) well under control. But if you really feel the need to control the slug population in a puppy-free manner that doesn't involve turning your garden into a wildlife biotope... : ... then you might try small containers of beer. Slugs love it, climb in and then drown. It's pretty disgusting emptying out the cups; but at least it isn't poison!
Re: Slugs Thanks for the help everyone! i guess I'm still very clueless when it comes to most things lol. our garden is clean and tidy and we don't really have many flowers, does everyone just have some anyway? i'll just keep the pup away from any, although i usually only see them at night lol
Re: Slugs
our garden is clean and tidy
Your puppy will take care of that pretty quickly!!! ;D Seriously though, any questions at all, just pop on here and ask away. Any way we can help, we will.
Re: Slugs We dont havce to cut our grass anymore................pup loves to cut the grass for us by ripping it up!!!! ???
Re: Slugs I agree , treating the dog is much more effective than treating the slugs . I don't use any products in my garden either , we have two ponds which attract frogs and toads , they do a grand job , so do the family of hedgehogs we have hanging around
