HI i was wondering how bad it is to let a 3 1/2 mth lab to climb stairs. I live in Malta and i have a flat roof where Milo is learning to go up and do his business. This means regularly visits up and down stairs. Is he too young ? They are a bit high but he manages ok. Theres 13 steps.

My breeder told me no stairs for the first 12 months .....me being me,I pretty much stuck to that, but my circumstances allowed that.If the roof area is the only area you have and so he has to do stairs, can you carry him ?that would reduce the amount he has to do them. I could probably manage Dexter even now at 2 years old but he is only a little .If not I'd train him to the steps slowly especially coming down ,don't let him hoolie down .....it's not always easy,Dexter sometimes forgets himself still and will leg down the stairs ,skid across the tiles and slam into the wall opposite..... :-\ :-[

The consultant vet said this is how many Labs fracture their elbows by coming down the stairs and crashing into the wall :'(

Apart from the fact that I live in a bungalow now , I`ve always been wary of stairs where pups and young dogs are concerned , I guess they cant always be avoided, but when we did live in a house , the dogs didn't go upstairs at all x

I live in a house with 20 steps up to it. I carried Charlie for as long as I could - about 18kgs - then OH carried him until he was about 22kg. Then we gave up. He does 5 steps, slowly, gets a kibble, then another 5 and so on. That's the best we can do....you just have to do the best with what you have.... :) :) :)

I can believe that Stacia,it doesn't happen a lot as he is hardly upstairs but there can just be that mad moment every so often and my heart is in my mouth........we are just going to have to make sure he doesn't do it .....it's usually when one of us comes down and leaves the other one upstairs,he legs after us....it only takes closing the door behind you to control it......we will do better ;D
