Puppy classes... is there a point in going? aside from socialising with other dogs? We went to our first one tonight and it was carnage. Lucca ate so many treats he was sick everywhere (they did a pass the puppy so the dogs could socialise with other adults) he barked like crazy and just wanted to PLAY which wasn't allowed. We have done tons of socialising, people, crowds, vans, trains, buses, boats, bikes, children, old people, chickens (still working on that :-\ ) cats and a few other dogs etc etc Sophie and Lucca (13 weeks today!)
Re: Puppy Classes (why do we need to go?) umm.....well, I think it's tricky. I went - twice - but doubtful about what we really learned... On balance, I think it was worth it. Although it was chaos, it was at least semi-structured chaos, and at the time I didn't pass up any opportunities for extra socialisation. I can understand if you think it's not worth it, I reckon it's finely balanced....

Re: Puppy Classes (why do we need to go?) I wanted to do puppy classes but Chepi wasn't clear of her injections then the next class was ages away. She goes to day care and socialises there and on other days we go to the park where she socialises. I researched classes before I got Chepi and thought some were chaotic and decided I only wanted clicker training. In the end I had some one to one clicker training and haven't been to a class. I will be looking into gundog training classes next and hope to find something suitable. She's 5 months now so maybe it's too soon for that. Perhaps you just haven't got a class that's right for you.

Charlie was in gundog classes at 5 months - best thing ever for him. Look for positive reinforcement only though.
Re: Puppy Classes (why do we need to go?) I've been to outdoor puppy classes and it has been brilliant ;D! Lots of distractions to cope with, dogs, cyclists, kids, horses, etc, and learning in an everyday environment. Lots of chances to socialise our pups as well as learning all the basic obedience. We're moving onto gundog training now and I'm so pleased we've done the basics.
Re: Puppy Classes (why do we need to go?) I think it probably depends on the class - they seem to vary a lot. I thought the puppy class I went to was useful as it helped me to practise getting Molly to focus on me and by chance one of the other owners was able to give me some helpful advice about loose lead walking. We then did a follow on class with the same trainer which was also good, but then started KC bronze which I eventually gave up as it was a different trainer and I didn't seem to get on very well. I think if you can socialise your puppy and do basic training at home that's fine. I didn't attend classes with any of my previous dogs and they were all pretty much OK. Later on you might decide you want to do a specific activity (agility, findings etc) and go to a class for that. We do gun dog classes just for fun.

You want to develp good behaviour in these situations no matter what OTHER people's dogs are doing. And you have an advantage - a desire to do the best you can for your pup......and excellent advice and tips and help from Pippa and all those with real good experience on this site. Fabulous! Such a good start for you both 8)
Re: Puppy Classes (why do we need to go?) Our classes are outside which helps space wise I think, though Bailey more bouncy there than at home, ! We go because my 3 kids 17-21 take turns so we all from same page! Maybe this class isn't right for you but another might be? Our trainer has 3 adult labs, so she does quietly favour us I think!
