As an aside, this is one of the great benefits of science based training. The process can be applied to any dog because it is such a simple concept. As Rachael said

The difference between dogs will determine what it wants at any given moment in time. But we, as owners, living with our dogs on a daily basis, are probably in a better position to make that decision than any other trainer will ever be.

My view, for what its worth is that we can overthink things if we aren't careful , actually adding complications that aren't there . I cant comment on anything said in the FB group because I haven't joined it, mainly because I find that dog groups tend to attract some awkward types who just want to cause trouble or be over opinionated . I`m afraid I tend to agree with Heidrun , even though my training experience will never ever reach her heights , in that most of this goes over my head completely :) I am a believer in free speech , as long as it never causes offence or is judgemental, so am pleased that most find this fascinating, it just isn't my cup of tea, sorry :)

I'm with Kate. I just go with what seems to be working for me and my dog, without overthinking it. But that doesn't mean others shouldn't enjoy this kind of discussion; just that it doesn't do a lot for me personally. Perhaps a separate forum section on would be good for discussions of this nature, as Pippa suggested?

I meant no offence Julie, just worried that training can become over complex and disected when there are easier ways to get the same result that have worked for a very long time :) It's completely over my head too ::) I prefer simple methods that works for me, Hattie & Charlie. I wouldn't want to think that new dog owners felt under pressure and become confused or felt inadequate with their training methods due the contents of this thread :) x

it is way way over my head, most of you know jasper is my first dog, i have trained jasper every day from day one, the only things i have read is pippas recall book and the forum site, i have had a lot of good advice from pippa and individual members of the forum
    i am a complete novice
i have worked very very hard putting my 100 % into training like helen i would of found all this confusing
what i can say without a phd i am proud with all my hard work to be able to take my very well mannered boy anywhere, his behavior is impeccable

Lynne you perfectly illustrate the power of those basic principles and the impact of a careful, systematic and consistent approach to applying them. It works, as you have demonstrated :)
