    I've actually found some! ;D ;D ;D

In a book called "Learning Games" which I've had for a while but it's a bit like a cook book - you pick out things you want to do, so I hadn't read it all the way through before. Now I have, I've found the whipit instructions.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Learning-Games-about-Dogs/dp/1890948365

There are two main games. The first is about putting a stationary "stalk" on cue - eg watch that, but don't chase, which is about impulse control and marking a retrieve. The second is about stimulus control, focus and developing an exceptional response - and this is the one I had begun to learn (getting the dog to play, give, follow cues, reward with play) - but it's very useful to have written instructions. The instructions aren't very extensive though, and I suspect not all that useful for experienced people who very likely have already managed to establish these behaviours anyway.

Excellent - I like Kay's books, but not read this one. And I would definitely like to hear and read more about the role and techniques involved in using a whip it

Great video! I really enjoyed that. STILL waiting on my lunge whip, though! Still, looking out the window at the blizzard, I think this is one for summer time :)

Interesting discussions on Facebook as to whether whipit encourages chasing. I wonder if, in a lot of things +R based, you have to be committed to following the training all the way to the desired end otherwise you end up having reinforced a behaviour (chasing in this instance) without having placed the control over the top of it?

Interesting thought. I might argue that, for a large number of dogs, they come with an in-built instinct to chase and you're simply harnessing that to make yourself more interesting to your dog. Most dogs would chase after a rabbit that ran in front of them; would (could?) playing whippit make this strong desire any stronger?

Like you say, following it through to the result shown in this video, where a dog is able to control its instincts, would be the preferred endgame and I wonder how many people achieve that.

Either way, my goal with whippit is (will be) to build arousal and interactivity between my dogs and me. We'll have fun trying (and trying, and trying...) to get to the level of training displayed in the video. :)

Hi I've just watched the video thanks for sharing and am going to get myself a lunge whip and give it a go...

But I wanted to ask what do you do if the dog tries to run off with the toy or how do you avoid a game of tug, I wasn't sure and I would like to know the answer to this before I start as personally I could see this happening

    Thanks all
    Lisa

This did happen at first - you walk away or to the side, just like if a dog gets "stuck" in a rigid pull in a game of tug. You move so the dog naturally takes a step to keep its balance and starts moving. Or you walk towards the dog and again it will move by stepping backwards then you can move to the side and the dog will also. It does mean that the dog can be trotting round with the toy, but not fixed in a set pull of the toy.

As time went on, Charlie could follow his "give" cue, so if I had difficulty restarting, I'd just ask him to give me the toy. He couldn't do that at first though.

I have just tried to view this video again and send the link to someone, but I can't get it to play. Anyone else have this problem?
Just thinking I might try sending myself the link and opening in another browser...

    Just bought this for Bob

We've only got a small garden so whipit would be an ideal game for him and me! Looking forward to giving it a go. I've not told the OH what I'm doing. He's going to be very intrigued when he sees I've had a large whip delivered ha ha!
