Penny is also vaccinated against kennel cough - it was a no brainer for me as I risked bringing it home from work when I was at the kennels.

The thing with the vaccine is it doesn't 100% stop them from getting it. They could still get it but only a milder form of it, or they could catch a different strain that the vaccine isn't effective against - kinda like our flu vaccine I guess. I would say it's still worth getting though as I think it protects against the most common type. I dunno....could be making all that up hahaha!

Hope Benson is feeling better now?

was interesting to hear different views on kennel cough vaccine - all day cares and even dog walkers require it here. Maybe risk averse...

The boarding kennels that Penny is going to in November require it, and so do some others I researched but they also said they could accept dogs that hadn't had it, it was just 'preferred'. They don't call it KENNEL cough for nothing though - it'll run like wildfire through a dog population in that close quarters so I imagine it would through dogs that share a dog walker or day care centre.

Over here you have to have given your dog the vaccine before they are allowed at a kennel.

Thank you Lauren, he is absolutely fine in himself and hasn't coughed for 2 days. If I hadn't heard him coughing in the night last week I wouldn't have known something was amiss, as his symptoms are mild. Saying that we are still keeping him away from other dogs, and not going out with our dog walker until probably late next week or the week after to be on the safe side. The vet is happy for him to mix as of this weekend but we will leave it a little longer.

Following on from comments around vaccine and kennels, I think especially if dogs are being walked by a dog walker it would be important to vaccinate against kennel cough, and a good idea for dog walkers to recommend vaccinating clients dogs before joining in on group dog walks. It is just so darned inconvenient! Notwithstanding the risk to other dogs especially older dogs or puppies that dog walkers also look after. More questions re: dogs lifestyle could be asked by the vet and or nurse on initial consultations.
