Hi guys, I"m guessing that we should crate puppy for car travel to start with as he will be too small to harness? Is this correct? And if so at what age/weight would a lab be able to move into a harness/seatbelt combo? What I really need to start with is a crate that will fix and take up about 1/2 the boot space so that we can just pop the puppy in as and when we need to travel. I don't want to be putting a crate in and out all the time really. Any advice people can share regarding car travel would be most appreciated. Lou x
Re: Travelling in the car with puppy I use a Trrans K9 crate in the back of my estate. It's been great and I'm hoping I can fit two dogs in there otherwise I shall be upgrading to a double crate as I think it's a safe way to transport the dogs and it's safer for us too if there is an accident they won't travel through the car. It also allows me to leave the dogs secure but with the boot open which was a key consideration for me.

Re: Travelling in the car with puppy The RAC do a puppy harness. It would have been no good for Tatze - she would have simply biten through the seat belt. We have Gypsy in the normal crate, which is fixed in the car but comes out easily - but she did hate it at first, it took her a few weeks to stop crying and barking in there. She's fine now (18 weeks)
Re: Travelling in the car with puppy I have a small hatch back but still managed to fit a small crate in the back and keep it secured. Lasted us for a good couple of months before she outgrew it.

If we invest in one of these proper dog racks for our Audi SQ5 do you think that will be sufficient for the puppy or is the space too big for him? There is certainly enough space for him to grow into.. Would this work? I'm trying to think of a reasonable long-term solution rather than buying small crates and then having to upgrade as puppy grows.... Thank you! Lou
Re: Travelling in the car with puppy Yes - I think it will be fine. Gypsy hated the car. Small crate, large crate, puppy carrier, car harness, we tried them all - it didn't matter, she simply hated the car. Some pups do. So we just had her in the large crate for very short trips every day. She is fine now.
Re: Travelling in the car with puppy That looks like a great rear guard Lou. Much more sturdy than the universal type we have seen, in fact also the recommended guard for my OH's car too. Ashamed to admit I don't have one in mine anymore. I really must get a new one for my new car.
Re: Travelling in the car with puppy Ooh love the Weimaraner's, are they yours? That guard looks very similar to the one we put in our Volvo, our dogs are fully grown and take up most of the space. Are you going to use a small crate in the boot whilst your puppy is small? x
