What training treats do you all use?

Just back from first puppy class (without Hollie to start) and they said to not use the same as home as there is more distractions in class.

Just wondered if I should use doggy treats or something like chicken/ham/hotdogs

    Thanks

Definitely good advice to raise the standard of treats in a class environment :)

    Ideal treats are:
    - soft
    - moist
    - flavoursome
    - won't fall apart, crumble or shred
    - small.

Cut up ham, hotdogs or cold cooked sausage or cubes of a firm cheese are all great. A mixture of all of the above is even better as it adds a bit of unpredictability.

I often use roast chicken out in new situations where I really want my dog's attention. But it does shred a bit and you can drop bits on the ground. That's not ideal for a class as you don't want your pup sniffing the floor all the time for the shreds you've dropped. However a friend of mine has great success in class with fried chicken skin :)

Chopped up smoked sausage or cheese cubes was our staple.
Sometimes cubes of toast too - even better cheese on toast cubes.

All brilliant ideas I'll be using some myself soon. Something strong flavored and smellys seems to be key. Got Pippa's books today so can't wait to get started. Good luck with your training. :)

I can vouch for the effectiveness of crispy chicken skin. On my husband. :D

Gravy bones! I have used all sorts of lovely bits of chicken, cheese, etc, but Maisie will do anything for a gravy bone!!! If she knows I have one in my hand while she is being told to stay, she drools in anticipation ;D

Must admit that I found the best treats were whatever were in someone else's pockets ::)
