Re: Outside before shots
We have also booked him into some puppy training classes which start about 3 days after his first jab.
I did the same. Don't expect anything of your pup at that age, but it's a really great start. Loads of people did this where I live, all with a note from the local vet saying he'd seen the pups and they had all had their first jabs at least.
Re: Outside before shots
Get the kids to quietly sit down at a distance and toss him treats Have them do that till he's happily come over to take a treat from their hand. Let him be the one to approach. They should sit, not move (other than to toss treats) and say nothing.
That's what I've been doing but they all under six four of them and very shreaky can't say I blame Lemmy for being wary my ears ring. I'll keep on though for puppy and kids sake. We have noticed he's a ladies man though lol my sons girlfriend can't sit on floor 2secs before he wiggles over flips for belly rubs and lays with head on her lap gazing adoringly bless. X
Re: Outside before shots I will talk to my vet and weigh the pros and cons. I had planned on not walking my dog till they at least got their 2nd set of shots. I cant imagine not letting my dog out to walk in grass though! We have about 1/3 of an acre of yard at my house and I will let the puppy walk around our yard and play. I did plan on maybe doing some puppy socializing. But it makes me wonder how can you know those puppies didnt pick something up somewhere and just arent showing real symptoms yet? I will also ask the breeder what she thinks when we pick up our pup this weekend. I cant wait!
Julie that is a great idea for us to take in proof he's had his first jab. I will call the puppy trainers and ask them what their proceedure is regarding jabs as well tomorrow as I would expect to see or have proof that the other attendees have also been jabbed too. Thank you! Lou x
Re: Outside before shots I'm not sure the pups having their first jabs meant much really - apart from a vet had seen them and thought them healthy. But I reckoned the chances of another 8 week old pup, all fresh from the breeder, having something awful was small. There was a much bigger risk, I thought, from the foxes in the garden and if they were carrying parvo the chances my pup would get it would be huge (but he was fine, of course, thankfully). Everyone has to make their own minds up on the risks during this period, for me taking sensible precautions but without skimping on socialisation was what I was comfortable with.
See, this was my idea when starting this thread. Where I live, we dont often see foxes. I think my neighbor saw one in his back yard like 2 years ago, but not since. So foxes carrying diseases arent really a big concern where I live. But since coming to this forum I have heard multiple people mention foxes and that they carry diseases and thats why you dont let your dog down before they've had shots. So there are little differences like this. It wouldnt occur to me to ever worry about a fox. I would be more concerned with my dog picking something up from another dog. I will def ask the vet at the first visit.
Re: Outside before shots Well, it depends where you live - I live in an area absolutely overrun with foxes... I understand parvo lives in the soil for years and years, so I really thought if the urban fox population had brought parvo into my garden, my pup was pretty much going to get it no matter what else I did. The chances of him catching something from other puppies, who were also being carefully carried so their paws didn't so much as touch the ground, seemed pretty slim in comparison.
Re: Outside before shots I live in California, our vet was very firm about us not putting our pup on the ground while we are out and about until after his 3rd set of shots. I have 2 friends who have lost pups to parvo in our area in the last couple years, so I'm going by the book! We bought a big wagon that we stuff our pup and our kids in and haul him around with us. Even at 13 weeks he's really heavy! Good luck with your new bundle of joy!
