We use a cheap own brand but as I am also concerned about the sugar & salt content I warm the peanut butter in the microwave to turn it runny then add it to the kong along with some bits of kibble and then freeze. The kibble bulks it out but with the peanut butter being runny it coats the kibble and gives the dog the taste with less content ;)

I doubt a small amount of peanut butter would be bad - personally, I can't quite see the point of feeding a dog things like peanut butter so I don't - or any highly processed things that have a lot of fat/sugar/salt etc. There seems no need, a little bit of sardine or something like that seems much preferable.

Our boy LOVED peanut butter. One evening, before going out, I smeared a very small amount (I never gave him more than a smear) inside a hoof so that he had something to do while we walked out the door. But I forgot to put the peanut butter container away. When we got back our boy met us at the door all waggley and smelling very strongly of peanut butter. He'd eaten the entire container of peanut butter!! And was very happy for it! The next day he pooed what looked, and smelt like, peanut butter!

But we don't give it to him anymore. I realised he had an allergy to it, nothing major, but whenever he'd eaten it, his eyes would get gooey in the corners and he'd scratch for no other reason. If he wasn't allergic to it, I'd continue giving it to him -- that little smear inside the hoof kept him occupied while he licked and licked and licked away at it. And there was many an online meeting where I was saved the embarrassment of a barking/moaning dog in the background because I'd stick my fingers in the peanut butter and let him lick my fingers while I was busy carrying on a conference call! He's all grown up now, so thankfully I no longer require the distraction of peanut butter.

I know most dogs tolerate it well but I would be worried it was too sweet or fatty to have on a regular basis.... It's probably fine every now an then for giving tablets or something. Personally I can't stand the stuff myself so I wouldn't give it to Pen anyway!

Can you get sugar and salt free peanut butter? That's what we get. We use a bit inside a Kong now and then.

If your concerned about salt I use Meridian no added salt peanut butter when giving it to Kenzi, worked a treat last week when she did her first rejection ever of worming tablets. Only downside is its natural, so the oile separates but once your stir & store in the fridge it's not too bad.
