Now that cooler weather has arrived and the heating system is turned on, during the day I have the house temp at 70 degrees F.....should I worry about my puppy keeping warm when I put the temp down at night to 65 degrees F?
I know that labs jump into ponds and lakes even in the Winter so they can swim and get exercise so this may be a dumb question, but I am a first time puppy owner....his crate is bare.....nothing on the floor at the advice of breeder plus he chews everything so wouldnt want to put a blanket or vet bed in there in case he would choke on it.
    Thanks for any suggestions.

Don't worry at all about the temperature at night , we rarely have our heating on and never ever at night . I think I would want to put some sort of cover in the crate though, even if its just old towels that aren't valuable if they get nibbled, pups (and adult dogs ) like to have something to snuggle up to , especially over night :) :)

My dogs sleep out in a kennel and have done since they were seven weeks old. Before that the breeder had them in a stable.

They do have a waterproof dog mattress with three blankets in the day, an extra two at night in summer and an extra five in winter to make a cosy nest.

You could put old towels or blanket in like Kate has suggested but just at night if your worried about chewing. It's not guaranteed but pup is less likely to chew in the night. :)

I found fleece blankets good - one of the only things Penny wouldn't chew when she was young. At the kennels we also used to use knitted blankets or towels for mild chewers.

If your pup is really young - less than 12 weeks, you might want to think about giving them a blanket or two but as others have said you don't need to worry too much. Dogs will develop a thicker coat in the winter naturally anyway, and if they are used to cooler temperatures.

My pup is a chewer but she has vetbed in her crate. Buy a piece to fit, don't buy a piece and cut it as the frayed ends could be a problem for a chewer. I also have put in a small fleece blanket. There are no guarantees but I also pop in a kong chew toy.

Oooh this is a worry, I bought a roll of vetbed for our little boy who arrives in just under 2 weeks... I was going to cut some off for his crate and also for the car. Should I not have done that? Actually I've just realised it isn't proper vetbed anyway... so am going to return it and swap it over. We get our crate on Friday so will measure up and order a piece to fit I think... !

Don't worry. I was advised that if you cut a roll you should heat seal the back where you cut. Now that's where I get stuck as I am not sure how to do that. Perhaps sealing with the flame of a candle. Loads of people but rolls and must cope and probably loads don't hear seal but puppies have been known to ingest a long string of unsealed vetbed.
People might think I am nuts but I just listened to advice from very experienced people. 8)

Not at all Jane exactly the opposite... at least I've got time to make the change now as we don't collect Bob until October 12th. I'd rather get the proper stuff or at least something that is made to fit his crate for now. I appreciate your feedback :)

Lemmy not keen on chewing fleece either so he has that in lounge then goes in his bed at night Kong's are lifesavers for getting him to hop into bed and nibbling till he falls asleep. Good luck. X

I use fleece blankets as I noticed when they were pups that even if they chewed it they didn't do much damage. I found this out because they liked to chew my Hunter wellie socks but didn't get very far. ::)

I just bought cheap human fleece blankets from asda. Just like the dog ones but because they aren't specified as dog blankets a lot cheaper. ::)
