Am curious to know what other Labs out there do at night -- do they sleep in one place all night or, like my boy, move around all night? What is normal?

I am starting to think that having the dog sleep in the kitchen is better advice than having the dog sleep in the bedroom -- as we were advised. We love our boy and love that he is with us at night, but I am suffering from sleep deprivation cos he wakes me up when he moves around. He has three spots in our bedroom that he alternates between throughout the night: in his bed (a big, comfy bed with padded fabric sides that he snuggles up to), next to the balcony door that has a cool breeze that comes through the cracks, and next to my side of the bed where he likes to rest his head on a down pillow that I drop on the floor. If it is hot in the bedroom, he will stand at my side of the bed until I wake up, or if I don't wake up, he will whine softly until I do, and then I know to open the balcony door to let him out to cool down. If it's too chilly, I close the door and wait for him to let me know to let him in (a single bark if I've fallen asleep).

During the day he seems to stick in one place. (I notice this when I work from home.) Probably cos he's exhausted from having moved around all night!

What is normal sleeping/night behaviour? Thanks!

So we shared a room with our dog when we were on holiday earlier this year and he did huff and puff and shuffle about. He normally sleeps in the kitchen and only very occasionally do we hear him when he decides to do a wholesale reorder of his bedding.

I'm sure on hols we kept waking each other up. I'd move him if I was you :)

My dogs like to move about and they snore loudly!

I don't think they wake up, I just think it's like us turning over or adjusting the duvet for temperature. During the day they also choose where to sleep according to temperature.

They sleep in the kitchen as I'm a very light sleeper, I wouldn't get a wink! They are fine and never wake up before I come down, even then they don't always get up until breakfast is served! (They are only 18 months and 5 months old)

    :)

Harley sleeps with us - usually on our bed, but if she gets too hot she goes into the ensuite. Apart from that, she doesn't wake up during the night.

During the week,Dexter sleeps downstairs in his room behind a gate ( it's the utility room room off the kitchen) if he barked I'd hear him but I don't hear a peep from him now....
At the weekends he sleeps on our bed.....he shuffles around a bit and can give a pretty good back leg kick at times if you get in his space but he never moves off the bed ,ever. He gets restless around 5 am( our walk time ) I can push him on if he thinks I'm still asleep but the second he knows I'm becoming conscious he comes and lies on my head.....

my two sleep in my room, we all start the night on my bed, but there is considerable movement throughout the night! In the summer presumably because it is too hot with all of us squashed on the bed they take it in turns throughout the night to lie cuddled up with me, the other one is on the bed on the floor, but they will swap places at least once during the night. They both get up periodically and have a shake and a stretch, then hop back up into bed and go back to sleep. When it gets colder - ie as of this week - they are both on the bed with me pretty much all night. I think I am their very own high sided bed surround, I sleep on my side and they like to curve into my body so I have one curled in the curve of the front of me, and one curled into the curve of my legs at the back. needless to say I never feel cold in the winter. I'm a really restless sleeper and flip about quite a lot, so I think I annoy them more than they annoy me with my moving about, so never felt the need to evict them!

Simba sleeps beside the bed on his own bed, he moves around a bit at night occasionally but it doesn't usually bother me. Occasionally he will have to get up because of an upset tum or something, then it get up and let him out as he scratches at the door.

Thank you all for your responses! So many funny sleepers out there -- I feel we are completely normal! :)

Probably the best would be to evict the poor boy to the kitchen, but I just don't think I can bear to go through the retraining and the barks (he has an incredibly deafening bark (if used, which is rare) and the neighbours will not be impressed) and I think I would feel incredibly guilty that he has to sleep all alone. As it is, he follows us around: if we go to the lounge, he gets out of his slumber from the kitchen to join us while we watch TV; if I work in the study, he treks up the stairs to sleep in the study while I work. Such a dedicated companion. I would not be able to bring myself to prevent him from sleeping in the bedroom with us.

We actually bought a king size extra length bed recently so that, if he did join us on the bed, we'd all be comfortable. He likes to start off the evening on the bed with my husband -- I am always last to bed -- but as soon as I get into bed, he slides off and settles down next to the bed. I wish he'd stay on the bed with us, but with all three of us he gets too hot. I would love it if he curled up with me as do Debsie's two!

At the dog park a woman told me her spaniel sleeps against the headboard the entire night, does not move until she gets up. Another woman told me that her staffie sleeps under the duvet the entire night with her. The closest Snowie comes to sleeping next to me is when he crashes down next to the bed (and yes, it is a crash, bumps the bed and can wake me up), one of his sleeping spots during the night.

It is now almost 10pm and the boy is complaining that we are not in bed yet!! He doesn't like to go to sleep by himself (have you ever?!). An alarm clock in reverse.

Lilly often takes herself off to "our" bed mid evening.
OH probably in bed first, Lilly shifts to the middle when I come.
Once both lights and TV off, she gets a nudge and is told "night night bed time" and hops off and goes to her bed - sometimes the one at the bottom of the stairs, sometimes next to my side of the bed. Never sure which.
If she isn't already in the bedroom she comes through at 6am.

As a pup she really really wriggled on the bed.
    Now she is pretty still.
At weekends she often gets to stay on all night. Frequently she gets up voluntarily and takes herself off.
    Might be my snoring :D

So wonderful that she is so independent! Although we are suspicious if Snowie does take himself off to our bed when we're not in the bedroom cos then we can expect the "turn down service", ie he has dug the duvet up!! Usually it looks like someone has turned it down from the pillows, and funny as it is, he is not allowed to do it because there will come a time when he will dig right through the sheets and mattress I am sure. If we catch him in the act, he stands on the bed with such a naughty expression, we find it hard to reprimand him because we're laughing so much, such a character!
