It has been nearly a week now since Bouncer has been aloud out for his walks. Today I decided to take the plunge & do some off lead training in a public place. Suitibly armed with treat bag stuffed with dried spratts (his favorite high value reward) I head off to our local football field (soccer to our transatlantic neighbours). There where four dogs already there but Bouncer was more interested in defeating the lead (I have a chain one now as he demolished the material one on his second walk). So I took a deap breath & unclipped the lead from the harness. He just sat there so i walked off, he stuck to my side like glue which was ok but how on earth was I going to do recall if he wouldnt leave me? I decided on the, make myself uninteresting ploy & stood still with him sat at my side. After a couple of mins he decided to go exploring, I let him get 5 or so meters away then called him back, no whistles or quaky things for Bouncer just his masters voice. He immediatly came bouncing over to me to get his fishy reward. I let him wander off 10 or so times & he returned on command every single time, each one a bit further away. Awsome. I put his lead back on & he said hello to a couple of dogs & he was the picture of good manners (hmmm, must leave his naughtness at home). I only called it off because the heavens opened & it chucked it down. I am one proud puppy owner.
Re: First off lead training Great to read , I`m all for letting pups off lead as soon as possible when they are far less liable to wander far, its a great age to start training too , but keeping the sessions short as their attention span isn't so good , well done indeed
Re: First off lead training well done when you get out and let him off lead more keep doing recall as you are but dont always put him on the lead just to go home call him and put the lead on sometimes then let him go again it keeps him guessing as to when you are going home they soon cotton on to what happens at certain things that you do

Re: First off lead training Sounds like a fab first off lead session I regularly bump into an 8 month old Boxer who has never been off lead. She pulls her owner all over the place every time she sees anyone in the distance. After talking to him I found out he was told by friends to not let her off lead until she was around 10 months!! He now wishes he ignored his friends and let her off from day 1. He's now going to classes and getting help with her
Re: First off lead training Great to hear Bouncer was such a good chap. Poor Boxer Ternaya,it's scarey letting them off the first time ( well it was for me ) but you really have to be brave and just do it! X

Re: First off lead training Took him to our town park today, walked him passed sheep & lhama's in a field & he didnt even bat an eylid. Took him off the lead a bit later & he behaved himself fantsticly. Then he discovered a stream. I now have one very smelly wet puppy, time for his first bath later, that should be interesting.
Re: First off lead training well done for finding water! Bet puppy loved it. Mine had first walk yesterday and first off lead today we have a fenced area in field for sports just unclippedand got him chasing me and throwing things to distract then running away so he followed both me and Lemmy are shattered now so bone for him and culpa for me. X
