Just wondered when we can expect Elsie to come into season, all our previous dogs have had a season at about 6 months but not Elsie so wondering are labs later than other breeds ? No plans to breed but was hoping to get her spayed while my husband is recovering from his knee replacement and can be home all the time with her, always hate leaving them for the short time they are in stitches in case they decide to do themselves harm.
Re: Season ? It's never written in stone.. Poppy was about seven months old with her first season, but it varies widely.
Re: Season ? Harley was about 10 months. From previous posts, I have read some as early as 6 months and some as late as 13 months.
Re: Season ? Thank you all, so nothing to worry about yet, and may not happen as we were hoping but not a huge problem will just be patient and wait. Will book some holiday when she is spayed I think.
Re: Season ? You may also want to ask your vet if they offer keyhole spaying. I think it was Pippa who I first saw mention it. I'm sure it would be more expensive than the regular operation, but it's a lot less intrusive so the recovery time is minimal and no need for the "cone of shame" - and maybe no need for you to take holiday, either. I'm going to ask my vet about it when we go back for our second jabs.
Re: Season ? That's a good idea Betty Chihuahua was done using that technique we were amazed at how quickly she recovered. Oddly Betty seemed more grown up at this age than Elsie which prompted my fears, she seems such a baby still whereas Betty was very adult like.
Re: Season ? Molly never had a season and was spayed at seven months. It is the norm at my vet's. She had a conventional spay. Our vet keeps them in overnight when they have the operation, so that they can have additional pain relief. When I picked her up next day she was her usual self. My biggest problem was the "keep her quiet" bit Molly's wound was closed with Superglue. She had no external stitches. She didn't require a buster collar as she just ignored the wound. My vet charged £202 which included pre op visit, operation including overnight care and a post op check.
Re: Season ? Penny came into season at about 9 months I think. My mums yorkie (tiny little 2.5kg thing) had a season literally bang on her six month birthday. I think smaller dogs do mature quicker than larger ones - my mums yorkie has always seemed like she grew up and matured very quickly. She seemed to behave like an adult dog at about six months old whereas my Penny was still very much a puppy at a year.
Re: Season ? Yes I think that is what we are finding Betty was almost adult at this age and Elsie is still a daft puppy. I am sure our late Mollie was the same but it's hard to remember 15 years ago what she was like. I think Elsie is better on a lead than Mollie was as we haven't either of us been complaining of hurt backs and shoulders - not so much lunging and plunging !
Re: Season ? Got my definitive answer it's 10 months for Elsie ! And what a mess, she is scared and worried and not a happy girl. Betty has decided she doesn't like her which is upsetting her too. Can't wait for this to be over and get her spayed so we can be a happy household again..
Re: Season ? Oh bless her , they can become clingy and quite silly when in season , especially a first one when they can also be confused as to whats happening , she might wee a little more than usual and possible lose her appetite x

Re: Season ? Harley's appetite dropped for a week too. She also was very clingy, whining a lot and really out of sorts ;( i had lots of hugs that week
Re: Season ? Just be very matter-of-fact about it - nice and sympathetic, obviously, but not overly so... It'll be over soon.

Yes we aren't babying her too much, I remember my late Mollie being worse when she had a season, Betty was a breeze in comparison just absolutely determined to escape - found her several times trying to get out of windows and we are in a flat so she wouldn't stand much chance of surviving the fall !
