Well, we went to the butcher for the first time since we got Willow. It's only the second time I've been there; before that I stuck to the regular shops for my meat, but he was recommended by a friend and I have to say, he's fantastic. He's so friendly and helpful, as well as being good value for money, so we like to go there when we want something special, even though he's a bit out of the way for us.

I bought what we wanted for ourselves, then asked if he had any carcasses. He asked me what for, stock or a dog, and I said both, so he made up two bags, one with four huge meaty chicken carcasses for me and the other with absolutely masses of offcuts for Willow of chicken, pork and beef. I weighed it when we got home - it was 3.4kg just for Willow's bag and he didn't charge me a cent! I think Saturday morning is the time to go, because he closes at lunchtime and doesn't open again until Tuesday, so obviously has to get rid of what he has. I couldn't believe it. Our freezer now officially has more food for our pets than for ourselves.

It's a shame he's not closer - he is a good 20 minutes away in good conditions, but when the snow comes and the road is full of numpties, it will be closer to 40 minutes to get to him. Otherwise, I would absolutely be thinking of shifting to an entirely raw diet for Willow.

The butcher's wife came and said hello to Willow (who was waiting outside with John) and made a massive fuss of her. She smelled so good that Willow gave her lots of happy licks!
