Hi All, We are finally back, we now think we have sorted some of Ozzie's tummy problems, by putting him on Canagan (grain free) kibble, but we are now struggling with training treats, we use chicken a lot, but this is becoming a bit of a bore for Ozzie, as he had a Rice and Chicken diet for a long time, while we tried to sort his tummy problems out, which is a bit of an issue with training as he doesnt see Chicken as a high reward anymore. We haven't had any allergy tests as of yet, as our vet has advised us to try this first and to see how we get on. Obviously he is ok on rice so it can't be all grain he has problems with. Can any one offer any advice? I am more than happy to cook/make anything. I have looked at Liver Cake recipes but lots of them contain flour and I don't know what we can replace this with? Also they seem to have garlic in them which I thought wasn't good for Dogs? Is there other cakes/treats I could make for him also? As we would like a mixture of things to be able to train and treat him with. Hope this makes sense to everyone.
Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! Gypsy has the same problem. We give her dried sprats, they are great. A whole sprat for a big treat, cut up sprats for training. Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! You can get gluten free flour in supermarkets I use that to make cake type recipes, I invested in a dehydrator and do dried liver, chicken, apples, bananas and carrots which they both love too.

If you find a recipe you want to try on the internet just do a straight switch- I do this all the time and the recipes seem to have worked ok so far with gluten free just as well as regular flour. Fish for dogs also do some good treats made from dried fish so gluten free- they're extra stinky and Molly wolfs them down! Vikki and Molly
Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! You could use rice flour instead. The recipe I used didn't have any garlic, so just leave it out. The one I used was just liver, flour and egg.

This might be a silly question but I don't know much about wheat allergy type things, its seems a bit of a mine field to learn about but I am slowly getting there, is gluten free the same as wheat free? - Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question. I have just found a recipe for Rice Flour, which I might try. I think we might order a 200g of the dried sprats and see what he thinks of them, he not generally fussy in what he eats and he seems to love the Salmon Canagan food we give him, so hopefully he will like these too

Gluten can be found in several grains wheat, bulgar wheat, durum wheat, wheat bran, wheat rusk, wheat flour, wheat starch, modified wheat starch, wheat protein, rusk, semolina, couscous, barley, barley malt, barley flour, rye, rye flour, spelt buckwheat, corn, malted breakfast cereals, oats ... some more I can't remember them all off top of my head. I only trust flours and grains labelled gluten free. Try to use rice and rice flour as much as possible.

Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! Harley is wheat intollerant. We use dried liver pieces, venison sausage, tripe sticks, barker and barker liver, liver &cranberry, arctic fish treats. I tend to stay away from ready made treats/biscuits unless they are wheat free.

I would if it works just carry on. That is certainly what we do.
Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! The treats from barker and barker are great. I use them for Penny and even when I order the same flavour over and over again she never gets bored of them. The arctic fish ones would be a good one to start on - there's a few people on here with sensitive dogs who use them and don't seem to have a problem. The other great thing is if you order the small ones the daily allowance is massive so you don't need to worry too much about giving too many!
Re: Wheat/Grain Free Doggy Treats - Help! Someone on here has a food dehydrator, too, which may be worth considering if you have the space. You can dry out pretty much anything in them; meat, veggies, fruit, whatever. Good for human treats as well as doggy ones!
