Anyone using a all natural flea and tick treatment for puppies ,I just picked up my 8 week old and want to use all natural and not the poisonness of the frontlines and such ! Any help would be great thanks
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments Hi there, I haven't used these myself. I would rather use something licensed and known to be effective. I know some people who swear by Billy No Mates but don't know if there is a lower age range for this. Once you get fleas in your house it can be the devil's own job getting them out so I would be really wary of recommending them. Perhaps you should speak to your vet.
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments You don't need to use anything! Only if you see a flea; in 35 years of dog owning I have only seen one flea on one dog. I certainly haven't seen any on my last four dogs, my present two are nearly 3 and eight and a half. No fleas and no treatment needed.
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments Ticks are my biggest concern as where I live we have them in abundance! The vet asked us about starting frontline , our previous lab was on it for his entire life and I'm not wanting to use strong chemicals like that , I am a taxidermist and I see how hard it is to kill ticks and some chemical that is topically applied and kills a tick after a bit , I don't like it going into my dogs system! Just me but I feel it was the reason he came down with a cancerous growth in his chest!
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments I feel it's important for dogs to be protected, and I use conventional products prescribed by my vet. I have a good vet, who is happy to chat through the pros and cons of products. I'd say be wary of jumping to "natural" remedies. All sorts of genuine poisons are completely natural.
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments I agree with JulietT that some so called 'natural' remedies can be poisonous! In view of the fact that you live in a tick infested area then I think you should use a product recommended by the vet. But I wouldn't have worried about fleas otherwise
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments I have to say Bravecto, the newish oral treatment for Ticks and fleas which lasts for 12 weeks seems really really effective. Prescription only from vet.
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments Some areas have a flea problem and some don't (where I live we don't and I don't treat for fleas). If you do find that fleas are an issue then I'd pretty strongly recommend a proven product recommend by your vet. Fleas are a nightmare for both humans and dogs and you want to use something that actually works
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments Interesting thread as we have been going through the same "questions" ourselves. Picked up our puppy 4 weeks ago and our breeder recommended Billy No Mates as he uses it on his 6 other dogs. We decided to try as we prefer natural products. Only problem is that every time we mention it people turn their nose up - even though they have never heard of it. My Husband and I have decided to stick with the Natural stuff. If we have problems in the future we will reconsider but for now it is working for us.

Re: Natural flea and tick trestments I am another one who doesn't regularly deflea their dog. We don't appear to live in a high tick or flea area and whilst I will make use of modern medicines if necessary I don't see the point in filling a dog's system with unnecessary chemicals. This will be my 23rd year of dog ownership and we have never had a problem. Well, now I've dammed Molly to infestation tomorrow
Re: Natural flea and tick trestments I use Billy No Mates and mine have never had fleas. We get the very occasional tick on my spaniel but I just remove it myself. Mrs B - Don't be put off by people who turn their nose up at it - I think it is far less toxic than chemical products. I will always use natural treatments over chemical ones if at all possible for both the animals and humans in my house. Chloe
