Well we had a lovely time at the beach, Fraisthorpe Beach is an amazing place, miles of lovely sands with hardly anyone around. We let them off and all went well, racing through the water, and back to us regularly when called, until they decided to run in the opposite direction and as the wind was against us they couldn't hear us, so they just kept on running....and running! We sprinted down the beach after them, in our wellies, laughing, but in a panic as they rapidly approached the car park! Luckily, they saw a big yellow lab and wanted to say hello and then stopped to play in a little stream, so when they then saw us they came running back to us - phew!! Needless to say they went back on lead after that. Their recall has been v good up until today, but we had no idea that the string sea breeze would cause us such a problem!! We will now be working on recall to a whistle which we will take with us for off lead trips out. We are going to the field tomorrow to work on it, as I don't want us to become reluctant to let them off when they have been doing so well. A few pics here, can't get many to upload to Dropbox for some reason. www.dropbox.com/sc/8v4392xhwovys6l/AADPF4yo8el0OYiIPWWwJpTsa Hopefully no-one noticed the two nutters chasing their puppies down the beach today ;D Lou x
Re: First trip to the beach - a few pics Great to hear you had a good time. Sounds perfect A great time had by all.
Re: First trip to the beach - a few pics Looks like they enjoyed themselves The whistle is a great resource for me
Re: First trip to the beach - a few pics What a fab day!!
The whistle is a great resource for me
Exactly what I was going to say Carries much better than a voice. Has saved our bacon on the beach!!
Re: First trip to the beach - a few pics Whistles are certainly a big help. Do keep in mind too that there may also be the fact that you haven't practiced recall on a beach before. All those new smells and things to investigate - it's quite a distraction you know! As you continue 'proofing' things will improve.
Re: First trip to the beach - a few pics Thanks for the advice everyone, we took them to the field today, and while their on lead walking still leaves a lot to be desired, their off lead and recall was great. Our whistle didn't work properly so we will get another, annoying as it was a dog training one we bought from the pet shop a few weeks ago. They got to the edge of the field and the entrance to the woods, where they haven't been before, but they still came back when called Lou x
