I think you will be really proud of Bud when you let him off lead. I took Harley to a football pitch where I know it is safe, but also very quiet. My daughter came with me and we walked about 20 yards away from each other calling her back and forth and slowly built up the distance. It is really scary, but so wonderful when you see them trotting / running around having fun :)

I agree with you. I am already so very proud of the little guy to be honest. His little ways and his cute actions at times fill me with pride. There's nothing i'd like more than to let him have more freedom (which is why i use an extended lead so that he has a slight sense of control and ability to roam at will.) It will be happening. All i can say is thank you again to yourself...and everyone else who has taken the time to offer advice.

As others have said, it would be good to let Bud off his lead for a run while he's still young. I can appreciate your worries, though, and if you have somewhere safe (away from roads) nearby then aim to go there. I prefer to take my two to woods which are well away from the main road, though it means a car journey. Both Wispa and Tuppence tend to stay close, unlike my first lab who would sometimes disappear for about twenty minutes with her sister while my friend and I stood helplessly calling them! They always came back ... when they were ready! I've never had that problem with our previous dogs. Perhaps my friend and I were too busy chatting, so the two labs just took advantage!

Take some treats and a squeaky toy with you, then call Bud back close regularly and reward him. The squeaky toy should attract his attention if he's busy sniffing!

Wispa used to go down the stairs just like Bud, staying close to the wall, once she was allowed to try. I was worried that I'd left it rather late for her to try, but she soon overcame her fear (she's not the bravest of dogs!) and now often chooses to lie on the landing, I suspect so she can see through glass at the top of the front door!

Good luck with the walks and thanks for Bud's diary - it's addictive!

Thank you. We are pretty confident that we can get Bud out into a field, a park or even some woodland in the not too distant future. It will do us good as well. We have no problems taking Bud to these places when he is older and stronger. Just at his age now has been more of a concern. But we will work out a plan and stick to it. And Bud will tell you all about it once it starts to happen.

You are more than welcome for Bud's diary. It is a pleasure to share (for us both) Thank you for giving Wispa and Tuppence their voices and letting them join in on the fun.
