How old do pups have to be before they like water? The dog( I don't want to use Sara's real name) and I went for a walk yesterday and came to a flooded section of path. I was ok in my boots, but not even premium treats worked for her. I had to carry her across it. Fortunately, it was a miserable day and there was nobody around to see me carry a lab across a puddle. :(

    Lol at that ;D
Harley hated puddles when she was younger. At 16 weeks she fell in a duck pond and steered clear of water for another month after that. At 20 weeks, you couldn't keep her out of the water (streams, ponds, rivers, sea), but she still walked around puddles! Even now at 15 months, she will usually walk around puddles ::)

My Lab Sam was 18 months old before he would swim :) He too would refuse to get his feet wet and have to be carried as a pup , then gradually progressed to paddling, but it took a long time and a lot of patience before he took the plunge . I don't believe if using any pressure at all , they will do it in their own time , Sam is now three and a half years old and I have trouble keeping him out of water :)

Riley loves to swim and any retrieving round water is up there on the excitement scale................still walks round puddles though ;D

No pressure, wait for warmer weather and get in there with her :)

Should have added - like Sam it took a while!

Holly liked squelchy puddles from a very early age. She started swimming at about a year old when she was running through a puddle and found it hadn't got a bottom. She just swam until her feet hit the bottom and carried on running.

Nowadays she loves a swim. She enjoys it most if we're throwing a ball for her to fetch, but is quite content to swim for fun.

This thread has made me so excited for when we can get Willow to the lakes and the beach! Roll on the summer time when it's nice and warm, she can take longer walks and we can take a picnic up to one of our lakes and lie there in the sunshine while she frolics in the water. Aaaah, heaven!

Benson was a bit cautious around water, would play happily round the edges of ponds, but not really swimming until 8 months. Casper our rescue dog, nearly 6 years old, didn't have a clue about water, an just like Benson would just tiptoe around the edges. Now he loves to splash around with his brother! I love the way he runs humpy backed like a puppy afterwards! :) :)

Mine will throw themselves into a pond or lake, but put one paw in a puddle, oh no!

Pongo was a complete woose about water until about 3 months old. He still walks round puddles, unless the whole road is flooded in which case he goes completely crazy and gallops through at top speed. And he loves swimming now (although it took quite a lot of persuasion to get him out of his depth the first time...at about 6 months I think)

Every lab is different, it seems!

At 10 weeks Max loves the water. :)
He absolutely loves running through shallow water at the beach. I'm constantly refilling the water bowl as he paddles in it and he's always running under the hose or taps. When I first got him at just over 8 weeks, he was running around the pool, fell in and discovered he could swim. He only likes being in the pool if I'm carrying him or he's sitting in a pool toy though. He's also not fond of baths.

Meg was a water baby from day one. She is a magnet and the muddier the better. She swam at 5 months. The cold does not bother her. It freezing here now and she has been in the river today. I guess all are different :)

Lilly fell in our pond when she was around 16 weeks.#First adventure up the top of our garden and she stepped right on a Lily pad (yes, honest) and got a dunking.
Lucky we were on hand to help her out.
Put her off big puddles like the sea and rivers a little bit, but surprisingly, not as much as you would think.
The pond is now a round patio.....
