There's no denying it.... our house does smell a bit doggy at times. Not a big problem, but what tips would all you experienced dog owners share about the best way to get rid of that 'old sweaty socks' smell?

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda all over your carpets leave over night and vacuum up in the morning, windows open whenever you can, zoflora disinfectant used on as many surfaces as you can manage and keep your dogs as clean as possible. Some say never bathe them but IME I have never let mine go more than 2 weeks without a freshen up and once a month a bath.

Now, I work in a boys' secondary school so my nose is pretty finely tuned to 'old sweaty socks' and indeed the other various fragrances associated with teenage boys, and I have to say I infinitely prefer 'eau de labrador' or even 'eau de wet labrador'!! But in terms of house proudness, I agree that washing dog beds is a help, definitely, and I think our house has a more conventionally pleasant smell (!) since we had the downstairs hard-floored, although that is a little drastic and has its own issues regarding slippiness for dogs.
Re: Top tips for getting rid of smells.... Thank you! That's all really helpful. I think we made a wrong choice in getting Pongo a dog bed that isn't washable (well, not in the machine anyway) so it doesn't get cleaned as often as it should. Do you have machine washable beds? What sorts?
Re: Top tips for getting rid of smells.... I never bath my dogs, they don't smell at all. My friend baths hers a lot - and he stinks! The natural oils keep the smells away imo If they are muddy I hose them down outside. If they roll in something foul I rub them down with Cowboy Magic. We have lots of dog beds! (but only 2 dogs ) A crate, with vet bed. A wolfie bed, which I put a cheap B&M 'duvet' style dog cover over so that I can wash the cover. A Tuffie bed, which I cover with vet bed - very easy to wash and dry. A plastic bed with cheap B&M matrass, which washes very easily. I have 4 spare bits of vet bed, 2 spare 'duvets' and 2 spare matrasses so that I can wash them a lot.
Re: Top tips for getting rid of smells.... Our house definitely does not smell of dog, we have hard wooden floors throughout with rugs and I wash Hattie & Charlie's beds once a week. They have plastic oval beds with fleece liners and sherpa fleece blankets. I have never bathed Charlie who is 3 years old and he is shiny and non smelly with only a hint of Labrador when wet! Hattie is a Labradoodle so has to be bathed and clipped every 3-4 months and she doesn't smell either, well at least I don't think they smell and I ask everyone who comes into my house if the can smell dog and the answer is always NO x
