Hello, our vet gave us last Friday for our 11 week lab Advocate flea and wormer, not to be given for two weeks as she had a worm pill, Drontal, two weeks ago.

I was looking on the internet what it was and saw many people on forums saying that if your dog has a leather collar on, or plastic clip etc., this stuff can dissolve it, they had written to Bayer to get their remarks, and apparently it is like putting nail varnish on your finger nails, but no good for polished surfaces.

There were varying reports about this stuff, and I am now wondering whether to use it, it was seven pounds, for one treatment, Chloe as far as we can see has no fleas, but had been scratching herself a bit.

Has anybody any comments on this stuff please. Apparently it spreads around the skin. Chloe does not wear a collar, so I suppose it would be ok, she does have one and it will be used from next Friday, it is material but has a plastic clip., Apparently not all vets know about this stuff doing this.

    Thank you, Val

We use Advocate. Our dog goes to day care and now and then we spot a flea that's hitched a ride. Usually it's dead or staggering about (due to the Advocate).

Advocate certainly can bleach leather. I speak from experience here (leather couch....). But it has had zero effect on Obi's cotton/nylon collar and harness.

Advocate gets into the fat layer under the skin and spreads around the dog. When we put it on we put a series of half a dozen dots right on his skin (parting the fur) rather than putting the whole lot in one spot. That way the surface of the fur stays pretty dry. We put it on before he goes to bed, and by the morning it's all dry.

Our previous dog did not go to day care and we never used flea treatment or ever saw a flea on him. But we have to use something with Obi due to the random dog encounters he has every day. The Advocate seems to be a good option and it seems to work. We have ever noticed any negative side effects to Obi.
