Hi, just joined the forum, we picked up our new 8 week old black lab Shortwoods Bert 2 weeks ago. He's had his first jabs, 2nd one and microchip being done on 28th. He's from a good working line and can't wait to get him out in the field. Early days yet, getting him accustomed to the house, children and cat, but it's all great. he's going to be a pet first then my right hand man as I want to get into the field stuff, shooting, beating and field trials. Hes very happy, eating well already put 3kg on in 2 weeks, likes his collar so that bits gone well, now got to sort getting him used to and accustomed to the lead now ready for first walks. So welcome any hints and tips. Also looking for advice on where to go obedience and field training either in or near wellingborough Northants . Thanks for now Steve
Re: First post - proud new lab owner Him Steve, welcome to the Forum and great to hear a little bit about your new pup.... I can't help with your questions....I don't live in the UK and Dexter is our first dog,he's working line but has no choice but to live his life as our pet.....no appropriate training support where I live in Dubai....I experiment with bits as other members post about their skills and practice but it is only to keep my bright boy's brain engaged and his focus on me .....not always a success ;D but I try! Looking forward to hearing how you get on when he is out and about Best wishes Angela
Re: First post - proud new lab owner Hi Angela, thank you for my first reply. I Forgot to add he's KC registered as well so we are also discussing our options about wether to neuter or not. I'll try and post a few pictures soon

Re: First post - proud new lab owner Hi Steve, a warm welcome from me, my three year old black Lab Sam and our rescue scruffpup Millie . Sam is also from working lines and enjoys his gundog training , you will find loads of information in the gundog section on here and loads of advice too Your little lad sounds delightful , I would aim to get him out and about as soon as its safe to do so, but for now , attach his lead around the house and garden, just for a few minutes at a time so that its not alien to him when the time comes for him to go out and about, good luck
Re: First post - proud new lab owner Welcome here! I live in Canada and own a Lab/Newfie cross who is settling in to be a lovely addition to our family after a bit of a rocky start when we acquired him when he was a year old. Lots of gundoggy people here, I'm sure you will get great tips and support.
Re: First post - proud new lab owner Hello, welcome from me and Charlie. If you are looking for trainers, you might try the positive gundog facebook site. There are loads of trainers on there, and whenever people ask for suggestions, there are usually lots of replies.

Re: First post - proud new lab owner Hi there and welcome to the forum from me and my four spaniels. If you are new to gundog training and working a dog my advise is to join a local working gundog club. Most clubs start training classes in the spring, at that time your pup will be the perfect age to join in. If you want to get into competitions with your dog you will have to join not just one club but several, but one step at a time for now.
