Hmm, I had it in my head that I should be worming the pups every month until they're a year old and after that every three months. But my vet today said that I should be doing them every other month. I generally listen to his advice, obviously, but I got to thinking, Willow likes the taste of sheep poo, so is once every two months enough? Is there a problem with doing it more regularly? He also said that he's seeing a marked increase recently in dogs being brought in with flea and tick problems, and says the climate has been ideal for their breeding, so the pups should be treated with Advantix (or similar) every month. Does that sound right? What do you all do?
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Well you know from my ear mite thread....I've run into trouble recently :-\ Even though I'd been using an inappropriate product for our area I still do Dexter spot on treatment every month and I worm him seperately every month too.....he's not as bad now at 2 but he can suddenly regress on occasion and have a snack on some deer poo he finds out in the desert....I've always done this Fiona from 5 months....let's see what members that have young pupsters say x
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Only do worming as not really in Tick country, Kenzi was every month until 3 months and then every 3months after that - not sure if that's the area we live or specific to my vets.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat I'm confused on this also. Just been to the vets with Rolo (will post about this later!). I was given advocate for Rolo which I was told covered everything did him 1st of Oct and 1st of Nov didn't realise this was for a dog under 10kg so now need a different one but the vet has also put him on drontal. For tapeworm and ringworm I am confused with it all to be honest. Obviously don't want the little man getting any nasties but why is he now on 2! Confused
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat I think we were monthly for 3 months then 3 monthly. I am a bit lax on the wormers and probably do it around 3 times a year...vaguely. More interested in tick treatment. Bravo Bravecto - although plan to just use it over the summer months. Notably we DON'T have any great problems up here (apart from the ticks) And our vet has NEVER tried to sell us either flea/tick or wormer treatments. If we had more problems we would possibly be more strict.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat
I was given advocate for Rolo which I was told covered everything did him 1st of Oct and 1st of Nov but the vet has also put him on drontal. but why is he now on 2!
Advocate: Treats and prevents flea infestations Controls roundworm, hookworm and whipworm and gastrointestinal nematodes Prevents Heartworm Treats lungworm Treats sarcoptic mange, demodicosis and ear mite infection But does not act against tapeworrn, so an additional treatment (eg drontal) is necessary every 3 or 6 months as recommended by your vet.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat So, if I have this right, Drontal only works on gastrointestinal worms. Advocate does not act on these, but does cover others. Advantix repels flies, fleas and ticks. So a comprehensive treatment plan would use all of these. It seems like a lot of different products! Is there a combined parasite solution that would cover all worms? Oh, and I've just read that the Drontal puppy liquid suspension, which is what I have, does NOT cover against tapeworms! ARGH!!
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Advocate acts against gastrointestinal worms - apart from tapeworm, so you need to add a tapeworm treatment. There is a wide overlap between Advocate and Advantix and I don't think it is great to use them together, although the maker (Bayer) says this is fine. If you want to use Advocate, an alternative tick treatment is best. A tick collar etc. although there are other things and a few forum members have tried Bravecto. If you don't want to use Advocate, and use a broad wormer, then Advantix would give you the flea treatment. There are a couple of things about Advocate - the ear mite and lungworm protection - that you have to make sure are covered if you use something else.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat I use Milbemax and Bravecto, every three months each. Exmoor is tick country so I need something that works well, Bravecto has been brilliant.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Im on my phone but can any of you guys find that helpful post that Lochan put up a few months ago....I thought that was really helpful.....
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Is this the one you mean? http://www.thelabradorforum.com/index.php?topic=2360.msg22730#msg22730
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat http://revolution.com.au/#/tab/revolution-for-dogs If you scroll down on this link here I found a table which shows what each brand treats which might help you.
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Thanks all. That chart is interesting, Tahlia, but since it's obviously selling this Revolution product, I'd need to see what it's leaving off - I can't see lungworm there, for example, so I assume it doesn't cover that. It does seem unnecessarily complicated! Surely there's a market for a one- or two-product solution to cover everything?
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat I'm glad you pointed that out because I thought that product covered everything! I've done a bit more research because I also was confused on this and I can't seem to find a single product that does the lot unfortunately. You have to combine a flea & tick treatment as well as wormer and some wormers don't prevent heart worm?! I've found a better comparison chart which actually cleared a lot up for me but it does say these are Australian products. http://www.mammothpetsupplies.com.au/choice/dog-flea-control-comparison-plus-tick-heartworm-an/292 It says: "If you are using advocate for instance, you will see that it doesn't cover ticks or tapeworm. This might not be a problem if you do not live in a problem tick area, but you should definitely then include a tape wormer only tablet such as droncit, popantel or virbac tapewormer into your pet's regime. Another example is if you use advantage, you will see that your pet is not covered for heartworm or intestinal worms, so you might choose to add proheart for heartworm coverage and drontal for intestinal worms. There are many more possible combinations."
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat These are really good reasons why you should choose your products with advice from your vet. For example, heartworm is not a problem in the UK, and lungworm risk varies from area to area. How often your dog needs a tapeworm treatment depends on lifestyle. Your dog might have individual problems (eg ear troubles) that means protection against ear mites is more important than for other dogs. And so on...
Re: Confused - how often to worm/tick treat Julie is right. Advocate does everything but tapeworm. So need to use a drontal/milbemax/droncit or equivalent. Monthly until 6 months old and then every 3-6 months depending on dogs habits really. With labs I'd lean towards every 3 months because let's face it they're not known for they're restraint when it comes to eating gross things they find on pavements, in woods, in bins ... well anywhere really!!
