This is a bit weird, but Shadow is always full of static! When I stroke him you can hear it "fizzing" in his hair and he keeps getting little electric shocks - off the crate, off me... Willow doesn't have the same issue. They sleep on the same bed etc so it's not "nylon knicker syndrome". Any ideas? Could he need more natural oils in his coat? His skin doesn't seem to be dry at all.
Re: Static Shadow! How bizarre, I've never heard of that in dogs. Learn something new everyday in forum world. No ideas at all, but will be curious to see the replies.
Re: Static Shadow! I am a person full of static - I get it off car doors and all sorts. I have an anti-static spray, but I'm not sure if it's ok for dogs. :-\
It could be the bed. A build up of static is due to the friction between different materials. Two different people can walk across the same surface and result in different static charges because of the difference in the way they move. It depend on how he interacts with materials as well as what they are.
Re: Static Shadow! Mmmm, I wonder if the breeder shampooed him before you collected him? Might be then that they'd stripped the oil out a bit? Poor little love
Re: Static Shadow! The only static experience I have is of when I used to be cabin crew...I used to unconsciously drag my feet as I walked up and down the cabin ...and charge myself up! I swear sparks used to fly at times when I passed someone a drink ;D I used to feel quite sick sometimes by the end of the flight...as I'm sure did the poor people I'd shocked!
Re: Static Shadow! We get a lot of static this time of year in Idaho - it's bitter cold outside, and we heat with wood so it's just very very dry out. I haven't noticed Bella or her big sister Crystal (who's not a lab....she's a livestock guardian couch potato of a dog) all staticy - but the house itself is charged up for sure. Usually when it's bad I just put a kettle of water on the stove to kind of steam and add moisture. Boiling taters or pasta for dinner helps to add the extra moisture too. when I find a particularly sparky area...I have a misting squirt bottle with water and vinegar in it, and I just spritz down whatever it is...doesn't hurt fabric at all, and is safe for all the 4 legged friends in my house. I have even been known to spritz the cat...he doesn't like it much, but it keeps the static at bay...LOL
Re: Static Shadow! I always use fabric softener on their beddings when washing. Strange that Willow is not sparky, but Shadow is!
Hmm, well it has been very cold here for the last little while, so maybe it's that. Good idea. Although it's weird that it doesn't seem to be affecting Willow. Maybe she doesn't wriggle as much in her sleep!
Re: Static Shadow! I have a humidifier attached to my heating system. But you could also use a stand-alone humidifier in the doggy area.
Re: Static Shadow! Put a big fish tank in the living room and you'll be humid all the time! Ever since we did that, nosebleeds and horrible static in the winter disappeared. Or just teach Shadow a new trick. Shock, Shadow, shock!
Re: Static Shadow! Ew, fish. No. Although I know someone who just bought a pet lobster, which is pretty cool. But no. I'll just have to make sure he gets lots of swims and then stick him in front of the radiator
Re: Static Shadow!
cool, you have ElectroPup 8)
I wonder if I can get him to charge batteries?
