Drove 8 hours round trip with Rue in the car last weekend, and she was nearly perfect. I am so, so proud. She sat next to me in the passenger seat and was calm/quiet the whole time. I don't want to be a boring old fart but do have a look at the various car harnesses that are available and perhaps do some reading about which have been properly crash tested (not just based on manufacturer claims). Both humans and doggies are better off with seat belts
Re: Road trip with Rue Maybe there's info in the products section about harnesses; I would be interested in them too. Rue is a beauty (speaking as a choc owner!). I am thinking of doing a similar journey down to Cornwall; it must be lovely to have a dog up front for company. Like Rue with snow, Chepi would experience the sea for the first time. Lovely pics

Re: Road trip with Rue Talking of harnesses - does anyone know if you can connect two to the same seatbelt? As of yet, we've only taken the dogs out in our Jeep, which has a crate fitted, but I can see that in the future, there may come a time I have to take them out in my car, which is a little two-seater Roadster. I know they say dogs should never be on harnesses in the front seat, and when you've only got two seats, it's a bit of a bother. So I'm thinking that having them on harnesses, one on the seat and one in the footwell, would be better than nothing. But I don't know if such a thing is possible? This would be a VERY rare occurrence and something that I would avoid if at all possible because it's not ideal. But does anyone know of such a device (that's properly crash tested)?
Re: Road trip with Rue We had a clip that went on the belt instead of into the clip, so in theory you could use two. We have 3 seat belts in the back of both cars so will just use the harness clips when they don't go in the boot with a dog guard. Backseat, yes. Because the airbags in the front may kill a dog (not being designed for dogs), and there is just more to stop the dog's forward momentum in the back if the harness doesn't stop all rotation.

"When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars." Don't want to get stopped by the boys in blue
Re: Road trip with Rue What a star - she is lovely and sounds like she had a ball Definitely agree with what's been said about harnesses. safer for the dog and also for any humans in the car. In addition to the risk of it jumping around and distracting the driver, if you have to stand on the brakes in an emergency, an unrestrained dog can be lethal :'(
