i am new here ....I have a dog just over a year old and he has a rash around both eyes........and spots here and there on him - could this be allergy ? I have been using cold compresses to sooth, I really don't feel like going the vets - they are never sure without tests - just wondering if this rings bells with any other owner???

Hello there and a very warm welcome to the forum.

A rash around both eyes sounds sore - poor boy. I suppose you expect someone to say "see a vet" :) But I really think you should. It's impossible to speculate on what could be causing your dog's problems on the internet. If you don't have confidence in your current vet, could you find another one?

    Hi and welcome! :)

I would strongly recommend you go to the vet, as what you describe could be a whole range of things that it's not possible to distinguish between just based on a written description. For example, it could be a food allergy, seasonal allergy, flea allergy, mites, ringworm or some other fungal or bacterial infection of the skin. All these things involve different kinds of treatment. It's possible that what your dog has is going to be quite easy for the vet to diagnose and the treatment might actually be simple :) Your dog will be a lot more comfortable once this is treated :)

I just wanted to hear from any dog owners that may have experienced this is a young Labrador - I have had Labradors before and never seen this>>>thank you for your advice guys - the rash has only just come up and the weekend is now here thus asking for some advice on here .....I will go to the vets if it get worse or starts causing him pain ....I am not a cruel lady : )

I realise I am stabbing a little in the dark, however, being fellow Labrador owners I guess you guys know that the eat "anything and everything" and I just wasn't sure if anyone else's Labrador had ever had these symptom's - first time anything like this has happened to my new addition.

It's how our late yorkie Duncan's allergy problems first started, must consult a vet as it could be an allergy to anything or could be something else entirely.

Sounds like some kind of allergic reaction to me, too, although I have to add to the chorus that your vet is the best place to get an opinion on something like this. :)

The first thing that springs to mind for me would be a grass or pollen allergy, however at this time of year (assuming you're in the UK) this would not be very likely. There really is no way to tell for sure - as others have said it could be a whole range of things from an allergic reaction to mange or ringworm. Unfortunately almost all of what could be causing this may require veterinary intervention to treat; rashes rarely go away on their own and if it is an allergy it is likely to reoccur without treatment and finding out what has caused it.

If you're worried about vet treatment being too expensive then speak to them - often they can work out a cheaper course of treatment to try first if you're wary of paying out for expensive tests.
